I recently changed to the long putter purely out of interest to learn more about this method.

In this video I dive into what a zero torque long putter is all about and the type of golfer who should be considering this option.

In addition I reveal what major champion Lucas Glover told me about fitting a broom style putter and how to set up to give yourself the best chance of success with this method.

Hopefully this answers all your questions on long putters but if not then be sure to ask your questions in the #comment section.

This video might not mean a lot to you, but it means a lot to me. I’m about to show you something that I’m changing with my golf game. It’s something I’ve been looking at for a long time, and I’ve never had the courage to give it a go. So, in today’s video, we’re really going to dive into the long putter, the broomstick, the sweeper. I don’t know what you want to call it, but we’re going to dive into that thing. See the putter that won the Masters with Adam Scott and that style, and can you incorporate it into your game? We’ve got it all in here. So, let’s get going. The long putter. I know it’s intrigued me. It’s definitely something I’ve been looking at for a long time. The whole intro on tour of angle balance putters. Zero torque. I get it. I totally get it. It wants the putter to swing and the face to stay super square without any pull of torque taking that face anywhere. So, you’re not going to have to react to the putter because the putter is going to allow you to putt it with that. If you truly get thinking about zero torque and how these putters sit in those devices and allow them to swing without any twisting, then you then start to go down the avenue of thinking, okay, so if you’ve tried the arm lock, which I like, and you’ve seen me use this for a while, it still sits in this lie angle. So the club still has to move and keep the face square to the path. But if you start to get into a position, and we can see it when we get on the putting plates there, all about start line, which I’ll tell you how I tested this thing out initially, but if you can start to get that putter to swing vertical as close, cuz we know the lie angle legally can’t be at 90, but if you can get the putter close to it and easily get the eyes over the golf ball, which my mirror can do here, I can easily get my eyes over the golf ball. Stay stable. If you’ve got some of the Y word in there, which I know there’s a few of us who will be experiencing that, then you now separate the hands totally, you take out any of the twitches that you might be experiencing because of the separation, and you swing the putter. Then this could be something that’s for you. This video could be for you. This tech could be intriguing you. The face being in front of the golf shaft lean like that could be intriguing you. the shaft going through the CG of the putter, the stability. You’ve got all that on the Spider ZT because you know about it. But let’s talk about this method and let’s talk about some of the tips I’ve had from guys on the tour who use this with success. So, you’ll notice and we’ve had some comments in here before about I’m not the tallest human in the world. Fine. No problem. I accept that. Look at this. Look how short this thing is. Here is my arm lock putter and I’ve only just gone longer than it. There’s a reason for that. I tried this thing up at the driver length. I tried it longer than the driver. I tried it shorter and now I’ve gone probably just longer than my rescue club would be if I carried one. The reason for it is, and this tip came from Lucas Glover, who if you were watching his putting, he was struggling. So, when it comes into rolling one of these, he said to me, you want to take some inspiration from Adam Scott. You want to try and get over the golf ball, be an athlete, and get to the point where you can literally get your ey line perfectly over it and then rock. The next thing he went on to say about this is when you put your thumb on top for stability, it’s worth trying to create an angle here as close to 90 as you can because that then allows you if I point this at you, the viewer, getting my shaft lean, getting my stability, getting my eyes over the ball. If I go that side, that’s path. If I go there, that’s a draw path. It’s going to fizz past you on the right, left as you look at the screen. And if I go there, that will fizz past you on this side. So this becomes my guide for path. So when I step up to it, guide for path is there locked in. Now the right hand, again, playing a ton of golf with Dean Wilson, who’s top 10 alltime strokes gained. He likes to putt with a conventional putter and get his fingers pointing so that he can rock. put a conventional putter in there. Guess what? I’d be down at about 27 26 inches if I was doing that. But with this going into again going to Lucas and giving it that one. Allowing the hand just to fall. I think he’s like this. I think Bernard Langanger’s like this. I’ve gone more here. But just allowing this to fall into the pocket and then rock. And it really does feel like it’s something that potentially you can’t miss. Then doing it on the plates here through the TE’s and the start line. This isn’t easy, but we’ll give it a go. Get that and that’s a good acid test. Get it consistently and keep the mind focused on it and all of a sudden you’ll be finding a putter that’s right for you. You’re not going to make putts if you can’t get it through the start line and then it’s about the read. If we just start to hit putts on a chalk line, it becomes that bit easier. But I found with this, I’ve had more consistency with this through the gates. Now, when it comes to hitting longer putts, you are going to have to then trust your instinct a bit. But that’s another fantastic thing about this product because you get to a place where you can be an athlete. Again, I’m not the oldest, but I’m also like unsure where I’m going to go cuz you see a lot of old guys with this. So, God knows what I’m going to do for the next 40 years playing golf. But, I found if I get into a world like this where I can become an athlete again, there is no thought as to how I’ve got to hit these putts. It just gets back to, okay, how do I have to strike it? and you can get that great sound that you’re after when it comes to putting. Obviously, it has the insert in there, which is the tech that’s fantastic for Tailor Made. But it’s a case of if you’re struggling with your putting, if your data shows you’re struggling with your putting, if you’re intrigued by the science, and you understand that the blade can swing freer with a face that runs square to the path that enables you to start more consistently on your start line, then this could be the way for you to go. checking out the slightly longer one. And I would push you as you get these cuz fitting them is tough. Try to think about what I’ve said about setting your elbow and then letting the right hand hang because the grip is going to need to fall. I’ve had them before where my hands been at the bottom of the grip. I’ve had it where it’s been too high. You really want the grip to be able to fall right in the center so it gives you that nice bit of feel to rock freely. So fitting is everything. Maximum lie angle length. I’d say much shorter than you think. And remember, this is going to be heavier. This is the three dot head on the ZT. So, this is the heaviest head there is. So, by gripping it with light pressure, you really are able to let the putter swing. Well worth giving it a go, especially if you’re lost when it comes to putting. I’m five or six rounds in, seeing an improvement in my clip data. Viewing things a little bit different now. More feel rather than strike and concern. Longer putts have come easier. I’ve gone on a journey with the arm lock already that’s taken me down this route. I’m seeing more face stability on the tools I use to measure that. It’s certainly improving and I’m starting to see results. Will it stay in the bag? That remains a question, but it’s off to a cracking start and I haven’t felt this great about a putter in a long time. That’s difficult to do. You know the feeling. When you get one that you like, it’s a great place of euphoria. Get in the comments. Let me know the putter that you play and why. And also, if one of these long ones or whatever we’re calling them these days is something that is of interest to you. It will have a firmer golf shaft in there, you’re going to expect that. This is the KBS option in there. Plays a lot firmer because it’s heavier, cuz it’s longer. You want to go into those graphite options that won’t take up so much weight in the steel. The old school ones of these had steel only and they were absolute sledgehammers. Now you can get some feel out of this as you can see from those longer putts. That will translate into better putting. Subscribe as always. Hit me with the questions. We’ll come back to you with more videos. [Music]

  1. Broomstick and a claw grip? Trottie, is this a cry for help. Grant replaced his sweeper with the shorty again and he is putting lights out.

  2. I have to think these and armlock putters will be banned someday? I have to say watching the way you use it, it's the LEAST looking like that top hand anchors compared to most. I do think they look unwieldy, but it def works for a lot of people. I remember trying a belly putter back in the pre-ban days, and there was def something to it.

  3. Been using a long putter 48 inches for 20 years. Best and easiest way to put for me. I do not however like the center shafted putters, but will give taylormade a look.

  4. For me putters are like paint brushes, if you have the best brush in the world it won't make you a grait artist only practice will. 👍.

  5. Trottie, you gotta get TM to make a truss mount ZT Spider! I can't give up my Spider GT TM2 until it's available.

  6. "Is this the best new putter?" Simply: No. Broomsticks should be banned. That's just my opinion. I think they're ugly. But appreciate the video! Thumbs up!

  7. Still early to tell but had the spider X tour in the bag over a year and never thought I’d give it up…until this. Have the 34” So far it’s the best feeling and my putting is even better. Again, time will tell but good job TM

  8. It's sad how some comments dismiss this club "Because it's ugly". If you want to improve your game you need to adapt and think laterally, sticking with the same old way gets you the same old result.

  9. Switched from a LAB DF3 to this and couldn't be happier. Nothing against LAB, just never liked the appearance. Performance wise is on par or better than the LAB IMO, especially with longer putts. I upgraded the shaft to a KBS GPS 120 in 37" length and it made it even better.

  10. I use an odyssey #7 broomstick at 45”. I have a degenerative cornea disease in my left eye. And couldn’t putt with my normal putter anymore. But for some reason the broomstick if fixing that for me. An now I’m lights out again.

  11. I would think that if going to the broomstick was shown by data to be the better way than a lot more tour players would be using them. I always think when I see Adam Scott using it, it looks like he is anchoring but I guess someone would have called him out if that was the case. It seems to me that you are making a pivot point with your lower hand, and the upper hand can swing the putter towards and away from you too much. I feel like I see it even in this video.

  12. Not a VF or should it be legal discussion. I do have experience from using a Broom Handle as a normal club golfer who has the yips. First of all it saved me from quitting. I found it so easy from inside 15ft. On longer putts outside say 25ft it was a lot more difficult.

In the end I went back to a short stick and worked very hard at it. I did this when the anchoring ban was first announced as I didn't want to be caught when I couldn't use it anymore. I still use it every now and then for practice as I find it good for stroke. I went from hating putting to loving the challenge.
