Golf Psychology : How to Master Your Mind Between Shots
these golf psychology sessions with a PGA Tour golf psychologist who’s worked with six major champions will improve your golf and lower your handicap Got 202 into the wind So we’re going to require a pretty decent shot here Don’t want to hit the uh the guy cutting the green I think I’m going to need all of this to get there to be fair I think it’s got to go Probably not enough club Pretty good Decent shot Maybe there’s one more needed Yeah I’m happy with that Probably needed one more club So now we’re between shots What This is something that doesn’t really get talked about isn’t it Doesn’t I call What should What would you advise people to do I call this the hidden opportunity Craig because golf’s a strange game in the sense that probably 95% of it of golf isn’t golf Yeah You know only a small amount of the time we’re actually playing the game Most of it’s doing this He’s walking in between shots So I’m delighted to say that the Scratch at 50 Psychology Channel has partnered with Mind Caddy Mind Caddy is an app that gives you access to one of the world’s leading golf psychology coaches who’s worked with six major champions and hundreds and hundreds of PGA Tour DP World Tour players from all over the world Watch this video to the end where you can get a special offer to get access to Mine Caddy today Absolutely right What this time does is give us that unique opportunity to think and boy do we Yeah Usually it’s it’s a combination of regretting the past and anticipating the future Okay So we get lost in in in our thoughts And as we said previously you can’t totally control that But one one thing that you could every golfer I think could explore and it’s something that I heard years ago It was a guy called Fritz Pearls who said he said we need to stop thinking and come to our senses Right now as you’re walking in between shots I’ve had players experiment You you could you could focus on what you can see Yeah What you can feel with your feet or or what you can what you can hear Now it might sound a bit trit and a bit tree huggy but my experience is if you put your attention and we’ll test it If you put your attention literally on the feeling of your feet as you’re walking along it’s a wonderful way of calming things down and dragging you back into the present Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah So of course I think this particularly is poignant as we get into the latter stages of a round that’s going well Yeah You know it’s easy to start to think ahead Yeah You know start almost the worst thing you do is oh if I can par this par that and maybe that’s it then Yeah But you know you’ve really got to stay in the present And like you say by sort of just thinking about your feet on the ground it’s going to help you do that Just play around with the three senses What you can see what you can hear what you can feel I had a a guy uh a very very good amateur golfer who was really on the edge of blowing up all of the time His reactions to shots were terrible And we had him experiment with this and he said the feet didn’t do much for him Looking around didn’t do much for him But he said when he started to tune in Yeah to what he could hear Yes He said for whatever reason things really started to calm down and his ability to deal with shots got an awful lot better So you know and and ultimately I don’t have to be on a golf course to do this Just to walk for a bit and just put your attention on your on your feet walking along It’s actually a really pleasant thing because you know our body our mind is always going backwards and forwards in time Yeah Yeah Do this should have done that Your body can’t Yeah Your body can only be in the present Yes You know we all get told all the psychology books talk about staying in the moment staying in the present How the hell do you do that Yeah Well tuning into your senses your physical senses in between shots is a fantastic way Another thing that’s interesting usually under pressure and this is something the folks listening can can think about under pressure in between shots we either usually do one or two things We either speed up or slow down We get out of our natural sequence So by focusing on the feeling of the feet we actually reconnect back to more of a natural rhythm Yeah Yeah I know all the I mean I was just as you were saying that there I was just listening to the green keepers mowing the grass Now some people would turn that into an a negative and you know that that’s you know who’s making that bloody noise kind of thing whereas actually if you that’s a one of the wonderful sounds of the golf course It’s a beautiful sound you know you know obviously the sounds around your planes going over whatever it may be birds obviously you know the sounds of the golf course are special And you know I think we waste this time in between shots by just being so much in our in our heads Yes As I said regretting what we’ve done anticipating what we’ve got to do and actually losing the experience of the game Yeah Yeah I mean the other thing as well people say to me you know in when I’m playing friendly golf I chat to me friends and then when I play a competition I try and focus Well you can’t f you can’t focus for 5 hours You can’t hold that intensity So conversation is is is a good thing It is You know you’re still present to that conversation Conversation can divert you away from Yeah But the but the actual principle of tuning into your senses is so powerful I call it walking meditation Yeah you know you’re grounding your grounding your mind in the in the actual present moment through your physical senses Yeah No that’s a great bit of advice So yeah in between your shots try and switch off from your game Definitely don’t regret on what’s gone on in the past Never dwell on what’s gone in the past There’s nothing we can do about that But by actually just taking in your surroundings it will just help you just stay in that great calm sense of freedom before you get up to your shot and then go into your process and your routine and executing your shots Hope you enjoyed that episode of the golf psychology sessions If you want to get
