there’s a scary truth about fairway woods that nobody in the industry is talking about and today we’re going to address it more importantly we’re going to help you understand how to fix it so the frustration with your fairway woods goes away now the truth of the matter is is with fairway woods we need a lot of club head speed to get the golf ball in the air when we have very little loft we need a lot of speed to get the ball in the air but what about those of us out there who are experienced golfers who don’t have the club head speed that we used to have well let’s talk about that and let’s fix that so the first thing that you can do is you can adjust your ball position now typically for a golfer who’s got a lot of club head speed I like the ball to be positioned kind of off the logo on a golf shirt when it comes to a fairway wood all right but if you don’t have the club head speed that you once had let’s move that ball back just a little bit so somewhere between the buttons and the logo on your golf shirt so let me go ahead and show you how you can do that so let’s put our feet together and what we’re going to do is we’re going to take a step towards the target and then we’re going to take a slightly larger step away from the target right so I’m set in here i take a step towards the target i take a slightly larger step away from the target and that will position the ball somewhere between the buttons and the logo on the golf shirt now this will help because it will help us hit the ball first before bottoming out behind it and topping it the next thing that we can do okay is we can adjust the flight of the golf ball all right when you’re hitting a fairway wood and this is probably the best thing that you can do is play for a little bit of a fade play for a little bit of a fade ball flight it is very very difficult for a low-speed golfer to hit a high draw with a fairway wood it’s almost impossible but that’s okay let’s just adjust the ball flight so if I’m hitting a shot right down the fairway here what I’m going to do is I’m going to take the club face and I’m going to open it just slightly so this club right here has got 15° of loft but if I take the face and I rotate it open just a little bit now I’ve got maybe 17 or 18° to work with and that couple degrees can help me get the golf ball in the air but it’s also going to cause the ball to fade a little bit no big deal so if I want the ball to finish at the blue flag down there I’m going to get that ball position we talked about okay i’m going to open the face slightly but I’m going to start the ball a little left of that blue flag let me go ahead and swing it a tad towards the toe so it stayed pretty straight but it got up in the air and had just maybe a little bit of a baby fade to it so the second thing that we can do is play for a slight fade bias open up the club face gives you a little more loft and can help you get that golf ball up in the air i I got a thumbs up there Nick is that a Okay there we go see I did a thumbs up nick did a thumbs up you do a thumbs up okay and like this video and sure be sure to leave a comment tell us where you’re from we love hearing about that and all the stuff we’re doing here at BLS Golf now the last thing that you can do to help you with your fairway woods is work on your weight shift all right we’ve done a ton of videos on weight shift and and how not to sway and the pivot it’s one of the core concepts of the vertical line swing and in the book The Bad Lie we talk about all that check that out it’s on it’s on Amazon so what we can do is make sure we get our weight forward when our weight goes forward that moves the bottom of the swing forward and helps us create more club head speed and get the golf ball up in the air so the checkpoint for you is going to be very simple when you finish your swing I just want your knees to be touching see that boom knees touch and as you go more towards the target you’ll be more inclined to get the golf ball in the air if you stay on your back foot to try to lift the ball in the air you’re going to be more prone to topping it all right so let’s kind of navigate this so here we go i’ve got my fairwaywood i’ve got this new good ball position that we talked about right i’ve got the face a little bit open i’m aiming and playing for a slight fade ball flight i’m going to swing it and get my knees touching oh gosh you could see that nick was that up in there was it up in the air see Nick’s not a liar that ball was up in the air had a little bit of a fade the scary truth is fairway woods have very little loft you need club head speed to get the ball in the air but these three tips can help even any golfer hit a nice bearway wood

  1. Everything is greening up quick in Southern Illinois- so this 70 year old retired coal miner hates using my fairway woods – always topping and hitting worm burners ! Hope the rain lets up for some Saturday morning golf . Looking forward to using US Golf lesson 👍⛳️🇺🇸💪

  2. Todd if you open the face slightly should your stance be slightly open or your feet level. If feet are level which yours look they are would this cause you to slice it or hook it

  3. Great lesson, need to try this as I never hit fairway woods. Usually use 4 or 5 iron to green on par 5s, but need to work on this. Thanks sir.

  4. Fairway woods were much easier back before the heads grew to be the size of old drivers, before drivers grew to 460 cc. Fairway woods used to look like hybrids do now. They also used to have a couple more degrees of loft. What they call a 7 wood these days is about what a 5 wood used to be. Grumble, grumble. Get off my lawn. I have to go shake my fist at a cloud.

  5. When I started having trouble getting loft to my three wood, I knew that it was because of the lack of club head speed. Your suggestion of moving the ball position slightly back and opening the club face is excellent. I have also started back to the gym to gain some needed strength to build up my club head speed! Well Done Todd!
