SILVIS, Ill. (WCIA) — Brian Campbell and Nick Hardy opened up day one of competition at TPC Deere Run.
QUAD CITIES WITH TWO FORMER ILLINI COMPETING. WCIA 3 SPORTS DIRECTOR GLENN KINLEY UPDATES US ON WHERE THEY STAND — AND TELLS US HOW THEY’RE FEELING THE SUPPORT FROM THE ORANGE AND BLUE FAITHFUL. Yeah, Tristan – Brian Campbell and Nick Hardy say playing back here in the state of Illinois means on just about every single hole they hear some I- L-L chants but they say that support is not rare at all, no matter where they’re at in the country. These guys say there typically is somebody in orange and blue showing them support. And you can bet those cheers got a little bit louder today as the 2014 Big Ten player of the year, Campbell, shot six under to put himself in the top ten BRIAN CAMPBELL: “Putted pretty well. I had a good stretch where I made a lot of one putts. These greens can be tricky to read, so you’re going to give yourself a lot of looks out there, but kind of understanding the little nuances in the greens is is huge.” Hardy goes one under on the day just on the outside of that current cut mark but 18 holes left to make up some ground and try to earn a spot staying through the weekend. Born and raised in Illinois, playing for the Illini in Champaign-Urbana. Yeah, this is a special week for the three time All-Big ten First team selection. NICK HARDY: “It’s the best. I love coming back to the John Deere. It’s my favorite tournament on the schedule. Two and a half hours from home and pretty close to Champaign, you get a ton of ILL chants, which is super fun.” I’ll be back here tomorrow with more coverage and if you can’t wait that long, my full one on one interview with Brian Campbell is uploaded at WCIA.com.
