I love to travel to visit a golf course that is off the beaten track and this week I find I little gem of a course on the west coast of the Lake District, Maryport Gof Club is a real mix of landscape but with a view of the sea that never goes away.

right good morning everybody it was an early start for me i’ve got a three-hour drive and uh well we’re almost there it’s a little bit fresh the sun is shining and uh it’s a pretty glorious drive as you can see to a destination that I think is going to be worthy of featuring an off the-beaten track i just hope this sun sticks around for when I get onto that first tea i’ll see you there shortly [Music] hey a a [Music] Now everybody knows I will travel far and wide to start off on the first tea with a decent backdrop and it doesn’t get much better than that and it also looks quite tasty down that way as well that’s the first let’s see if we can get one away and then I’ll explain exactly where we are so I’ve just bumped into Bill on the first tea who’s the course ranger I believe bill is that right yes sir how long have you been a member at Mary Port over 30 years okay so and and tell me a little bit about this place what am I going to I’m stood out or were stood on side the first i’ll be honest with you if this happened here I wouldn’t be going golf and I back in would you really i like it here i love it here i mean it’s part of my life now yeah yeah and this is why I got to the age I am do you mind me asking what age you are we allowed to ask or would you rather not 91 in April are you really yes wow i think we both let off the the camera woman’s a bit surprised as well there really oh you’re doing well i’m doing well you’re doing a lot better than I am oh you’re looking all right that’s incred so do you play much then yet yeah about maybe three four days a week just something I do ah good for you uh just something to do good for you keeps shooting mischief absolutely yeah do you think we’re going to enjoy it this morning like I said we’re on the first green i enjoyed the first enjoy it and tell me a bit about what I think it’s two different loops of nine isn’t it are we sort of we’re on the coastal part you This is what they call the the along the shoreline okay here is the thingy land more like in land is it maybe more parkland yeah parkland well it’s great to meet you Bill yeah thank you for the warm welcome very nice if anybody does make their way up to Mryport then uh make sure you search out for Bill and I’m sure he’ll look out for you yeah no problems so with words of inspiration from Bill I set out to try and not lose a golf ball on the opening holes which are pretty daunting T-shots and little room for error i am concerned that my game isn’t great right now and I’m pleased that I reached T4 with the same ball as I started [Music] so the holes you’ve seen me play so far or at least attempt to as was the first three I had the luxury of being down breeze at least but uh they’re fairly tough fairly narrow and Bill guided me with some advice on which way I should go or not and then we crossed over the road we got to the fourth i met a couple of members who stepped aside and let me play a T-shot into the breeze without a bounds left road on the right and I Julie crumbled and lost the ball off the tea so so far it’s been a tough old start but I’m liking what I see [Music] so I’ve made our way up to the eighth and my second shot and it’s almost like a green that sits on the horizon and you see uh well what is those or we’ll call them mountains in a backdrop the other side of the water is in fact Scotland so kind of Southern um Cowoot all those golf courses are on the opposite side of the water but it’s a great little climb cuz you you come up the hill and then you see this flag awaiting on the horizon and like I said it’s very much almost like an infinity green but it looks superb and it’s a pity the sun wasn’t shining be right sit down oh that’s gone off the back end of the infinity green we’ll have our usual stop 15th hole an incredible view and backdrop as there is for most of it to be fair you go inland a little bit on I think I think think the hole six seven and eight maybe but predominantly you’ve always got that view in the backdrop so that’s something I really like and enjoy i just wanted to talk about people like Bill and subsequently someone who you didn’t see on camera Charlie who came out and said hello and also the two members that we met really sociable uh people uh but Bill in particular 91 years of age incredible character and it seems that sort of every golf course has got a bill of sorts and I think it’s really important that we kind of acknowledge how important they are to the club uh we should be a little bit more maybe appreciative of them so if you got a bill at your club then uh every now and again just go and buy my pint and uh say thanks e I chatted with a few more members after the round at Mary Poor and I can confirm this is a very friendly golf club is also a great place to play some golf with a lovely backdrop and at £35 to play Monday to Friday it is great value [Music] golf now this was probably the worst light we could film a golf course in my swing was in a darker place than the skies themselves however and I really struggled to get any sort of game going i couldn’t do anything right and we stepped up on the 17th T which is playing near 200 yards with a main road running at the back of the green and my feeble iron was more like into a [Music] layup but fortunately I had saved one put to bring it a glimmer of hope and a glimpse of a smile i’m just sorry we couldn’t show the course in some better light and I hope we gave you some sort of feel for how Mryport is but for me it’s one to return to someday and hopefully the sunshines and my game is also in a bit better order for now I’ll call it quits and I’ll see you next week [Music]

  1. Meeting a guy like Bill reminds me I may have 60 years of golf left in me if I am lucky. I am a former competitive ice hockey and American football player with a busted up body. I’m late to golf but it is my new passion.

  2. My granddaughter lives not far from maryport, we walk Bella, a Cocker spaniel, on the beach just up the coast, miles of beach with hardly anyone on it

  3. That was a cool old golf coarse, and Bill playing 3 to 4 times a week, he probably walks too. Nice to meet people like that. Like you
say every coarse seems to have someone like that. Thanks for the tour, have a great week!

  4. Was nice meeting you at the port, great publicity for our superb unknown course ( I WAS THE GIANT ) you spoke with when you came off the 18th,

  5. Just compare this course with the recent "Golf Mates" post about green fees for the top 100. Trump international at almost £600 compared with £35 for this course. I'm happy that Trump's course is in financial difficulties and hope that this course and its members enjoy the delight, pleasure and challenge of this course for many years to come.

  6. Every course I’ve ever played has had a Bill. I haven’t met them all, but you can hear their lore in the clubhouse, pro shop, cafe and pub.

  7. Dumb question perhaps (from a drylander): Is the marshy looking area next to the course filled with water sometimes (high tide) or does it usually look like that?

  8. I absolutely love your channel and videos. I'm from Oregon USA. I was a huge golfer but now I'm very very sick ( long story ). But I dream through your videos that I was there with you. Golf in my opinion is never about a score but just enjoying your day from the beginning to the end. Thank you for the journey my friend

  9. Shame you didn't do Sellafield and Silloth, as all so close and great golf, valie and people. Or maybe you did, for later release!

  10. Thanks Andy. Your content always is top notch. I enjoy the views, the music, your commentary and your honest opinions on golf and life. Take care!

  11. I’m not close to Bill’s age but I’m on my 41st year at my club and I’m not the within the top 5 for longevity….but we are a rare breed in this day and age..

  12. As luck would have it, friends and I are playing maryport in June as part of a trip that takes in silverdale and silloth as well. I suspect silloth may already be known to you but a vid on s’dale idc and ahead of June would be greatly appreciated! 😂

  13. If you ever fancy a bit of company and you can keep the bacon coming I’m in! Also I really want to make it to Bill level. It’s the dream.

  14. Nice seeing PxG supporting you. If you were to go travel and play golf wherever in the world you might wind up, what clubs would you cart around with you? How many or how few clubs. Have to play some of the places you give us the privilege of viewing. Thank you.

  15. This is everything I love about golf! Meeting great characters like Bill (91!!)… gorgeous golf course in a beautiful part of the world. Great choice Andy, keep em coming, love these series of off the beaten track 👍🏻

  16. Enjoy all of your videos from testing clubs to videos like these Wishing America had beautiful courses like this keep up the great work Your friend from America Patrick

  17. I love these types of videos and Andy makes some of the best. I love to see these courses located around England/Scotland. These are courses I'll never get to play but seeing them here, in this format, allows me to dream.
