High lofted fairway woods are slowly taking over the PGA TOUR… so many players are adding 7 or 9 woods into their bags. Long irons are slowly being replaced with these wildly easy to hit golf clubs. In today’s video I test a 959x 9 Wood from Sub70 Golf, to see if it would make sense to replace my 4iron.

12:40 Is A 9 Wood For Me?
so there’s a secret club that has been slowly infiltrating and taking over the pga tool well clubs let’s say the lofted fairway wood or fairway metal however you want to word it every major golf media club media talks about it more and more the amount of players that are putting a sevenwood or a 9wood in the bag i myself have never even played a fivewood so it’s foreign territory to me i’m kind of skeptical if i’m honest i don’t i don’t get it but if the best players in the world are embracing lofted fairway woods maybe the joe glows the weekend warriors all the other golfers got to start thinking about it so in today’s video i’m putting a 9inewood in the bag and we’re going to see what it’s all about yeah i couldn’t open instagram this past week of the us open without seeing something from golf media about a 7wood or a 9wood coming off a tour truck and going into a players bag saw a little bit of it at the masters and we saw a little bit more at the pga championship but then this week at oakmont we saw a lot of players putting these high lofted woods in the bag long golf course thick rough super super super firm and fast greens so the dig the mass the forgiveness of the ninewood out of the rough is going to make a player want it the height stopping power under those conditions is going to make a player really consider it and we saw more players put them in the bag we’re also seeing players live with sevenwoods in the bag these days and it’s just really fascinating stuff when you think about 15 20 30 years ago no chance lofted fairway woods were for the lpj tour the senior tour or old women like it was never for a good golfer let alone a tour player times are changing so sub70 sent me their 959x fairway this is the 9wood 24° so it’s 2° weaker than a 4iron which is typically 22 degrees there’s three movable weights it comes standard with a 12 g in the rear 5 g heel 5 g toe you have all kinds of weight options here i needed to dial this in before i did any kind of testing to see the differences i needed to dial this in to fly 220 yards i hit my forearm pretty standard 220 yards i need a club to replace that there’s no sense getting something that goes super high but flies 215 cuz now the gapping is off between 5iron and 9wood and now we have a big gap between 9wood and two iron or something that goes really high but flies 230 now i have a small gap between 9wood and 2iron and i have a huge gap between 205ish 208 of a of a 5iron and 230 of a 9wood so i needed to dial this in to 220 yards it took a while like because they’re just so easy to hit they’re so forgiving but i just kept hitting it 215 yards no matter what i did so i messed with loft messing with weights quite a bit i got the loft all the way down to 22 degrees so it’s the same loft as the 4 iron the 12 g in the rear 4 g in the heel and 2 g in the toe so the face is open but doesn’t it looks really square but i have a little more weight in the i mean the weights are low heel toe i want more weight in the middle i want the mass more in the middle to try to bring the spin numbers and the launch numbers down but i got this thing pretty matched up to the 4iron obviously the launch and height was all different which we’re going to see later but now that i’ve got this thing matched up it’s time to take it to the golf course and see the differences out there and see why players were choosing these sevenwoods and ninewoods for those oncore situations not just for the numbers in the launch mark so this is probably the ultimate scenario we saw at the us open this past week thick rough where the long iron is going to be a battle to get it out of there where the lofted fairway is meant to just get down there and pop that thing out of there and fly pretty straight be very forgiving i’ve got 222 to that back flag i got some pretty gnarly wet florida bermuda here 9wood 4 iron 9wood let’s see how the 9wood stacks up out of this this rough i’ve never hit this shot before but just to think 220 let’s see the forgiveness we can get and the distance we can still get out of this oh my gosh it goes so high and just kind of knuckles but wow that was awesome felt like i didn’t have to do much there it’s like that four iron it’s going to come out lower i’ve got a bunker in front of this green got to hit this thing perfect oh jeez like if you’re marginally off there’s no there’s no chance with the three the four the five iron in a lie like that i thought i made a good swing there just a little shallow it’s wet it’s thick i took a lot of effort so now i mean this one is sat down good let’s see what happens i mean i didn’t get the distance out of it but that was easy and we watched it at oakmont all week like just hacking out of there trying to get whatever you can it’s my first time hitting a 9inewood out of the rough and that was easy so there’s the four iron there was the second ninewood out of the gnarly lie and there was the first 9wood just popped out of there pin high probably landed in the middle of the green and didn’t release whereas if that four iron knuckled and landed on that green it was running and then i mean we take these they’re terrible eyes but that 9wood was really easy that took a lot of work that wasn’t bad and then obviously that one is fantastic so now this is the shot that gives me a bit of trepidation or i’ve always thought the lofted fairway makes no sense because i’ve got 218 into a little bit of wind so it’s like 225 let’s say i always think that the seven would the nine is going to go way too high going to get eaten up by the wind so i want to see what happens here cuz this i would look at with four iron try to hit it strong and low it’s a front pin i probably could bounce it up maybe i pierce it through the wind well enough that it does get all the way there but obviously the bail out right is bunker it’s a second shot in a par five so you have some options but obviously something that goes high and strong and flies as far as the flag little room left takes the bunker out you know you take that shot and if it’s easier to do you take it and run so i jumped that on the toe i mean it was a bad shot missed the green left but it definitely did not get eaten up by the wind well a little below my feet i tend to jump on it so now here let’s hit that four iron and see how easy hard this is i mean that’s pure that’s right at it i’ve always been a high long iron hitter so that’s why i’m a little bit weary of a lofted fairway because i i’ve never struggled with hitting the ball low on long irons but there’s scenarios or situations like we just saw in the rough where this really comes in handy but if you’re someone that doesn’t get the long irons in the air struggles to get them in the air these lofted fairways there’s a reason we’re seeing a lot of guys put them in the bag yeah just don’t make committed swing shoot just it’s so easy to hit though i just need to trust it and hit it better let’s give it a fair shake i mean we pured that four iron we got to hit one good 9inewood to compare it against not two crappy ones man it goes so high but strong i’m just struggling with the release of it but gosh it goes so high and doesn’t get eaten up by the wind i want to do that again oh my gosh it’s so easy to hit wow that’s that’s that’s really impressive stuff i mean obviously that four iron was perfect those other ones that were left are just like right there so they did get eaten a little bit by the wind did hit it pretty high but that one that i totally flared to the right almost green high if i made that swing with four iron who knows if i made those swings with four iron they’re in the trees so obviously perfect shot like cool but the forgiveness i experienced in those does tell a good case for how valuable that club could be in the bag so out there on the course it was very apparent the difference in the ball flight in the trajectory and the peak height little easier for me to turn this over not fully adjusted to this let’s say i haven’t played with it enough haven’t got a great feel for it yet but gosh so easy to hit looks really good behind the ball one of my trepidations that about the idea of a ninewood is it’s like it’s going to look like you have so much loft looking back up at you but this one the matte black crown the kind of subtly matte shinyish face it looks really good behind the ball and it doesn’t look like the club face is just staring at you and in the rough like when i sat it down behind the ball it really looked like this was going to get through the rough when i sat the 4 iron down it was like i need some help here and when i’ve tested hybrids five i’m like i’m doesn’t look so good but the way that it just sits behind the ball in the rough it gives you a lot of confidence that you’re going to get that golf ball out of the rough so it’s a great looking club you definitely feel confident in throwing this down behind the ball i had alluded to the numbers so i tested this uh it’s like with anything if you’re going to replace a club in your bag you need to do the due diligence do a little bit of testing to make sure the new club the replacement the potential replacement is going to hit the yardage window you want on solid ones and still do you know what you wanted to do on miss starting with the 4 iron i’ve said it i like i like the long irons i hit them pretty high i don’t struggle a lot with them so my launch numbers are great my spin numbers are good and like the height’s really good it’s a strong but it’s not like a bullet for it’s not stopping when it hits the ground but i have seven shots here but there’s one shot that’s kind of like the concerny one and that’s a mishit i lost 15 yards it flew 204 i wanted to fly 220 so that’s into a green and it’s a mishit you know you’re scrambling unless it’s a back pin and it’s the front like but if that’s into a green or if that’s over a bunker over some water over some thick rough that’s trouble like the margin of error on a long iron is small it’s small you need to hit them well needs to be a good good ball striker to confidently hit a lot of llama the other one that’s like a bit of the outlier is when the long iron is kind of pulled a hair so it flies five six yards further it’s lower has less spin so it’s landing faster it’s skinny more it’s not stopping as fast so there’s like two ends of the spectrum with the long eye that’s going to create a big discrepancy in where that ball is landing and that’s where your hybrids and your lofted fairways are designed to tighten those uh those dispersions cuz they’re meant to fly very consistent not really dependent on how well you striking it cuz when you mishit it i noticed as i was testing this and was spinning a little bit too much or i was misitting it it always flew 215 to 220 it never flew 205 it never flew 230 and upon dialing it in we see the height’s higher it’s an adjustment and i felt like i didn’t have to do anything and no matter what like it just hits the window no matter what and we saw that on the 17th hole so it’s just very interesting stuff there and maybe that’s why you’re seeing more tour players gravitate towards these because they’re going the same distance over and over and over again you think how good those guys hit the golf ball they’re able to hit that yardage window time and time and time and time again with just more height landing it softer because when we compare the data headto head nine would go so much higher we know that we saw it outside but the the landing dispersion is considerably tighter we have the outlier we have the one mit with the 4 iron that brings that circle quite a bit more like this whereas the 9wood it’s considerably tighter and when we look at the numbers seeing the same yardage we’re just seeing more spin more launch more ball speed more club head speed more height it’s a longer club it’s a lighter club so you’re going to swing it faster it’s going to create more ball speed you’re going to need more club speed to get that distance because it’s spinning more it’s going higher but it’s hitting the window so it’s doing everything it’s meant to do it was designed to do i just would need more time with it to fully adjust to putting it in the bag but i also think i might be better served with a sevenwood than a 9wood cuz i like the 4 iron but i have a bit of a gap between four iron and two iron how often do i hit the two iron but if i had something that flew about 10 yards further right at that 230 232 window but super high that’s a yardage i i see myself getting from more times than not 245 into a par five so i could hit something high soft from 235 i have to like take less off a two iron there’s a big case for the 7wood going in my bag not necessarily the 9 was so all things being equal build out a 7wood in this 959x i could have a real good golf club for my bag and that’s why you are seeing a lot of players on tour with seven woods maybe not as many ninewoods we saw a lot of ninewoods temporarily in the bag this past week but we’re seeing a lot of seven woods in the bag we’re seeing a lot of loft at fairwaywoods in tour players bag so let me know do you play a sevenwood do you play a ninewood do you play a fivewood sound off in the comments below so let everybody talk about it and let’s see if what’s so popular and secretly trending on tour is actually translating to everyday golfers bags if these lofted fairway woods are earning spots in our bags or not so I don't play a 5, 7, or 9 wood, but I do play a 3 and 4 hybrid. I feel like they are just as easy to hit as the woods but still are able to do iron things with them. I know it's counter intuitive to what it's designed for but I can flight them if I want to where I don't think you can really do that with the woods. I feel I get the best of both with the hybrids versus the woods. I don't play rough like Oakmont either. It definitely is dependent on the course your playing and the conditions. I definitely think unless you're a scratch or better handicap leave the long irons out and get yourself lofted fairway woods or hybrids. Your scores will love it as they are just sooo much easier to hit high and far.
Most people with your speed use a very heavy, very tip stiff shaft to keep the spin and peak height under control.
I hit my 7,9 woods out of fairway bunkers too.
As someone who loves long irons. I probably wouldn’t replace my 4 iron, but putting a seven wood in between a 4 iron and 3 wood sounds like a good idea.
As a 70 year old I just couldn’t generate the speed to get 4-5 irons the air anymore, Added a 5 wood and 7 wood, changed my game for the better.
Today’s irons are too strong not easy to keep on a green. That may be a reason.
I love long irons and kept 4 iron bc it flies 220 for me. I did add 7 wood bc it flies 235ish and I can play it back and drive it harder to get 240ish if I need that for a par 5.
✳️ I game a Callaway Steelhead 111 2002 firm flex 5 & 7 wood which replaces the 3 & 4 irons ✳️
I have a 4-wood and 9-wood. The higher lofts definitely help me.
Why not compare with hybrid?
love it
Most players find 9 woods to be too unreliable, they’re like your deep wedges, 7w is more common, and of course hybrids are great.
Will you consider dialing in the shaft???
Been playing a 5,7,9 woods for the last couple of years best decision I’ve ever made
Naah, get both the 7 and 9 wood in the bag.
I stuffed the pride and put a 7 wood in my bag this year, Taylormade Qi35 tour, loving the ease of hitting it and still getting the yardage I want out of it! WITB is Driver(Qi35 LS-9*), 3, 5, 7 wood(Qi35 tour's), 5-PW(P7CB's) 52*, 56*, 60*(MG4's)
Playing again since 2020, after putting the clubs down in 2005. 62yo military vet here, bad back, but worked hard to get down to a 10hcp.
Cant hit a long iron anymore, and changed all my shafts from steel to Ventus 6. I have a 3,5,7, and a 9 wood. And the thing is, I LOVE that 7 and 9. Much more forgiving also. I will never go back.
