[Music] All right, everyone. Welcome back to the Tea Time tribe. We are a group of Florida State University alumni who decided to take our group texts and turn it into this podcast. In week out, we’ll be discussing all things golf from PJ tour events to our own personal experiences. We’ll start this one by giving a congratulations to John hitting his first uh spear bet on.
I’d like to thank like to thank the academy draft kings and for all of you for not putting any faith in me.
We’re always here for you.
Thank you.
Uh but we had a another thriller at the Rocket Classic three men playoff went five holes. Aldrich potter Google says I’m pronouncing that correctly. Got it done. First win. 20 years old South African. People were going low this weekend and another shout out to John. Lost that first round leader. Just
it was
you had a very very very big low and then a nice nice high at the end there to hit the
track. It was a great distra great distraction from work. Got to tell you it rode me because he was a morning wave so he was leading leading leading leading until about 5:19 on Thursday when I was getting ready to leave the office. Everything went kapoot. So that’s how she goes.
He he he had mini as first run leader. Tough loss. Tough loss.
Tough loss. Tough loss. Yeah. You know what? Another tough loss. I will just say I’ll I’ll come right out and rip the band-aid off. Uh Big Dick Rick did not did not uh play out how I thought it was going to. But what did you say in the text message? You said you thought this was the start to his RDER Cup.
This was this was this was his run at uh at the Ryder Cup. I thought this was his starting point. Uh you know, I I’ve seen some glimpses of hope from him. He’s put he’s put two or three rounds together. I thought this was one he’s he’s played well in the past at and it’s as you saw it’s a place that guys can go low. You don’t have to hit it super far, but if you can you get hot with the putter, uh hit a few good iron shots, you’re in contention. That did not happen. So, I he didn’t even make the cut. Apologies, guys. That was uh that was a poor choice on my part.
Yeah, I wish we had known that before the tournament started. Well, my pick I picked both Hoygard brothers and they both disappointed as well. Rasmus just missed a cut for our for our uh tribe bet. And then Nikolai missed my spear bet by one stroke which is truly truly painful. A tough loss for me. Now I’m stuck on the bottom of the leaderboard with John.
Hey, misery loves company. Come on down at the bottom. Um Ian, just for reference, Ricky I don’t think has any exemption going into next year on the tour. He won two years ago and I think that this is year two of that. He’s 72nd in the FedEx. So like he’s fighting to make to keep his card. I mean there’s no guarantees he keeps it. So that would have been a good starting point and then we can talk Rder Cup. That was just like I read that and I read that like four times and I was like what do we even what like look at all the names that are ahead of him playing better than him. I mean for God’s sakes we’re gonna I mean who what’s next? Joel Damon. I mean, is he making a Ryder Cup run now? I mean,
it was just an outrageous thing. I I wasn’t prepared. I wasn’t I wasn’t prepared for it. And you didn’t annun like tell us about your thoughts and it was just like I was stunned. I was more stunned than Mini losing the lead on Thursday. So, that was just a stunning thing to read out loud in my head. But we’re we’ll move on from that. That’s that’s enough of that.
You know, [ __ ] [ __ ] happens, guys. U you know, I don’t know. If I dare remember somebody choosing Nick Dunlap earlier this season. I don’t I don’t know if I remember who that was. Guys, guys, we can’t be turning against each other here. Come on. How dare you speak.
We’re way too early in this to be turning against each other.
Mr. 90, you leave him alone. Look, look, look. I’m just saying everybody makes mistakes. All right. This wasn’t my finest hour. I’ll admit it. It BDR, this may be this may be a few years for him to take his rebuilding seasons. I know he’s been going through quite a bit of rebuilding. So, RIP to Rick for for the time being. He’ll he’ll go into the DNB list for a while. Do not bet. So, so long.
Talking about the event, the Rocket Classic, formerly known as the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
I think that’s still up for debate.
Still up for debate. We’re not sure. Scientists scientists are still figuring it out. I’d be curious if we if we looked back at since we started our episodes, how many events have gone to bonus golf because I feel like it’s every other week we’re getting playoff holes and I feel like if we just bet that we would definitely be in the green, but we got another one this week. Was it three guys? Three guys done five holes. So, just a really good event. Probably could have bet that live like on Thursday at any point. I think like at any point during the the tournament there were like 10 plus guys within two strokes of the lead. So a great event just didn’t really bring the names. You know K Morawa tried, Matt Fitzpatrick tried but no one really ever sustained it and like you guys were just saying guys were just going low. I think they they broke the course record on Thursday only for it to get broken on Friday only for it to get broken again on Friday in the late wave. So like you guys were just saying we were saying it before the before we started here. guys were just going super super low. A great event. And Berg, kind of bring it back to what you said a couple episodes ago, like the guys just like playing up there. I know it’s not quite like the PA area, but you know, close enough. It might just be something about those tracks in that area that the guys like going to and just scoring really well. Suits their games.
Yeah, like you were just saying, um, or as John alluded to, as he found out on Thursday, Kevin Roy and our winner both shot 62 to beat Minu by one. And I think that was the course record at the moment. And then our good buddy Jake Knap goes out and fires at 61 on Friday. Crazy.
Y
and I think I think the cut was set at six under on Friday. And then the three guys in the playoff finished at 22 under. So like to your point, they were just it was just birdies left and right. And I forget who it was. John, I think you sent that someone had three Eagles
on Thursday or Friday.
I said Yeah. Yeah. I sent you.
Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah, it was. Well, it’s it’s a short course. I think on Sunday, one of the part fives was playing like 558. That’s you can get there in two pretty easily, even if you’re not even in the fairway. I mean, the way they got these guys hit it, you can get up and down pretty much from anywhere. Um, so there’s a lot of getable holes, short fours. You looked at like the stats of the guys in the playoffs, I think they they birdied like every single par five like all week. I think you go back over the four days, it’s like 18 out of the 20 par fives they birdied. So, I mean, that was just super getable. this poltergeist kid, the speed on him. I mean, they were saying like in the playoffs, I mean, that’s his, you know, bonus golf for him. I think one of his drives he was getting up in the high 190s ball speed. Um, and they said he can sit in the low 190s ball speed with his drives, which is just insane, especially for a 20-year-old. They also mentioned there’s only been a couple of international players who have won before they turned 21, and it’s like Siesta, Rory, maybe Gary Player, Trevor, and him. So, I mean, it’s just a super small, you know, really dominant cast of guys who have won before 21. So, it’s good company to be in. Um, I can definitely foresee him being a problem on the international squad for the President’s Cup down the line. Um, because that that tournament could use some juice every two years. And it’s good to have a South another good South African join the frey.
Yeah, Berg, you picked a South African. You just picked the wrong one.
I did. I did. It’s okay.
It was unfortunate,
Jordan. Jordan, I think I think there’s been seven events already this year that have gone to a playoff.
Yeah. I mean, that bet is money.
Yeah,
we got to hit it this week. It’s definitely hitting this week. My dear John Deere is the rocket 2.0. I mean, it’s just low. I think I I was reading past scores. I don’t think it’s anything worse than like minus 18 the last five years or so. People go low big time.
Got to be worth at least a jersey cup of coffee. That’s who I’m picking for the try bet.
Playoff.
Playoff.
Extra golf. Dibs. Dibs. Extra golf
B, thank you for shouting out. Um, I want I want to say exactly how you said it in the group text because it made me laugh so much. The Kevin Roy kid,
Kevin Cosner Waffle House Roy, whatever you said.
Was that I thought that was John. No,
no, that was John.
I thought that was
Hooters. Yeah, Hooters.
Hooters to
gave up his laugh so hard. That was so good.
I mean I mean kudos to him for Thursday. Not kudos to my bank account, but I mean, everyone found out who you are for 20 minutes. So, back to the Hooters tour. With all due respect, that’s where people like Keegan Bradley got a start there. So, there’s some cool stories out of there. So, you know, back to it.
Hooters. Hooters burger flippers, I believe, was the uh the phrase, John. So, thank you for bringing that into existence.
Hey. Hey. I I think that for me the interesting thing about like this part of the season, it seems like this is when you see all those names that you have no idea who they are. I mean, I sent that text to you guys a screenshot of like seven or eight of the top 25 at the time on like Friday. I had no idea, never heard of. And it it seems like it’s the same kind of lineup for for the John Deere this upcoming week. Um, you know, it’s it’s interesting to see who kind of steps up, takes advantage of the opportunity when, you know, those top guys aren’t there. Um, and kind of move up in the FedEx Cup, get some experience under their belt. Um, I mean, I I’ve never even heard of the the Max, was it Graser that was in the playoff?
I’ve heard of him. Yeah, Griezmann. He he’s uh he’s a new guy, but he’s been playing well for the past two, three years. I know he was on tour last year at least. Yeah, he had a runner up at the 3M last year, I think. So, this is his second runner up of his career at least.
Yep. And then how did uh what’s his name? Heismith. Didn’t Heismith play well as well here? Finished T34.
Yeah. Yeah. Joe Heismith. Yeah, he’s uh I keep I keep an eye on him. He’s a He’s a fellow big rim man. Big floppy hat. He’s one of the only guys out there that wears one of those. So, got to keep an eye on him.
I got to tell you, I was I was a little uh I was a little disappointed in our boy Luke Clinton. He did not did not show up on Saturday on moving day. Just did not have it.
He’s learning. Got to be four rounds. Be consistent. Yeah.
Another to say that’s okay, man.
Made the cut.
I’m all right with that. Another cut. Y
made some money.
You just keep making cuts because if you look if you look at his round on Sunday, he had uh let’s see, five five birdies, two bogeies, shoot 69. So, I played played fairly well, but not great for for that for that course. Yeah, Saturday just I think he he felt the heat from being in the position that he was in after the first two days. And you’re going to you’re going to get that. And I think now he’s learned from it and he’ll do better next time. I mean, the kid could [ __ ] move the ball. Jesus. I mean, look at some of these look at some of these drives. There’s not a single not a single drive underneath like 310 315 for Luke.
330. Yeah. For Luke Clinton. 330 335 314 328. Yeah. Speaking of Speaking of Florida State golf, as good a time as ever to bring it up. Top ranked junior Miles Russell commits to Florida State golf school.
There we go. We’ve been talking about it.
Go Nolles. Golf school. Golf. Top ranked junior in the class of 2027. Right.
Yeah.
He’s 27.
Yeah, he’s class of 27. He made um youngest player to make a Cornferry cut uh cut.
Finished T20 last year, I think, on Cornferry.
And he played in the Rocket last year, I believe. I don’t think he made the cut, but he his first round, I think he was under part. I think he shot a 70 on Thursday. So, the kids got some game
big time.
Yep. Yep. Yep.
Everything’s cool.
That’s right.
I love it. I guess last kind of thing about the Rocket Classic, you know, we were talking about Ricky trying to keep his tour card essentially, but we had Will Gordon who went birdie birdie on Friday to make the cut his last tournament on the major medical exemption to keep his card. I don’t know how you get more clutch than that. I mean, you can talk about JJ Spawn’s putt on 18 to seal the US Open, but good god, that pressure to know what you need to keep your livelihood alive, basically. Hot take. I I think that’s more pressure than the putt on 18 for JJ
100%.
You you’re you literally lose your your livelihood, your ability to make the the level of cash for your family that you have been up to this point, especially for the past two years being being injured to make it another full year to at least have that 500 grand guaranteed. That’s a life-changing amount of money to be able to run at least another year for.
Yeah. And I don’t know if after that if he had to go back to like Q school or cornfairy or what, but anyone you talk to, Q school is the worst is the most pressure you face in their career. You know, like I think someone on Twitter is Michael Kim. He’s, you know, on tour and he’s very active on Twitter and he responds to people and they’re like, “What’s more pressure? Q school or you know the majors you’ve played in and he’s like it’s Q school and it’s not even close.” So the fact it’s like you have to go through that all over again if you lose your card. That’s Yeah, that’s insanely tough. So you’re right. And I think that was way more pressure than any major putt that we’ve seen recently.
Well, have I I forgot, didn’t they change like the whole Q school around a couple years ago where like now it’s just basically your status on the corn ferry tour, not necessarily a PJ tour and you have to work your way up from there or am I completely wrong on that?
Q school is still Q school. Like if you if you win if you win two events on the corn ferry, you get you get on you’re automatically on the tour. Right. But didn’t they have used to have Q school where if you finish like top 20 in the Q school after all the different stages you were on the tour, not cornfy and now it’s I think it’s just corn ferry.
That I don’t know.
So I think there’s different levels to it. I think now there’s
some exemptions.
Yeah, there’s less slots out of Q school that go to the corn ferry and the PJ now I think. And it’s more slots from the corn ferry depending on your status at the end of the year. How many graduate onto the PJ tour for lack of a better term. Q school is very much still a thing. Um, especially for corn ferry guys or non-C cornfairy people. I mean, I think it’s a couple grand to get into it. So, I mean, they’re not going to not take that money if you have the game to get in. Um, I know the bar Barcel guy, Alistair, he came in like he was one spot out of making the PJ last back in the fall. So, he was super close, but I’m not positive on all the ins and outs of it.
Here we go. I I just got it. So, it says top five and ties earn tour cards. The next 40 finishers and ties earn guaranteed starts for the corn ferry tour season. The next 20 after that secure guaranteed starts on PJ Tour Americas and then those who finish outside those position hold conditional status on either cornfairy or PJ tour America’s circuits. So essentially you make final Q school qualifying stage. You’re at least guaranteed some kind of status.
I mean yeah I mean you’re still grinded. Corn cornfair is still still very tough grind. Not that the PJ tour is not, but right you’re you’re still going out for a much smaller pool of cash for very similar against very similar competition right of the tour. Yeah, I I do not envy do not envy falling back down. All right. Any any final thoughts on the good old Rocket Classic?
Bet the playoff playoff bet next year every time.
Yes, agreed. every time.
Couple talking points before we get to John Deere this week. I don’t know which one to necessarily start with. I guess we can get out our our hate segment of it. I’m just going to give a shout out to good old live golf and Patrick Reed saying that when he was growing up, he wanted nothing more than to win a live golf tournament in Dallas. Just just wanted to bang my head against a glass wall. Like what?
So [ __ ] stupid. Yeah, that’s uh man I you know you get like propaganda and all that uh all that stuff and it’s just like here’s the script. This is what you’re going to say after you win. We’re paying you a lot of money so you’re going to say whatever the hell we tell you to say. And now it’s when I was a little boy I’ve all I’ve ever wanted to come is to win this tournament with you know 53 other random slap dicks and you know win a trophy that was guaranteed money no matter what. That’s what everyone strives for in this country. That is what our forefathers and all those guys died for back in the 1770s against the British that we got a moment like this. Tell me how you really feel, John.
I mean, I think Eric Eric agrees.
Oh, 100%.
Well, piggy piggybacking off that, I went to last year or two years ago, I don’t remember now, but I went to a live event down in Dural. So, I still get their stupid emails. So, I got the recap for the tournament.
No. And it’s this stupid it’s this little You’ve been hiding this from us the whole time, JC.
Yeah, I have. I have. It’s finally I couldn’t hide anymore, boys. So, I like
the synopsis of the event. So, just reading it directly, it says, “And Crushers GC unstoppable. A third straight team victory puts them firmly in dynasty territory.” God, we’re getting a dynasty of a torn of
good been in existence for all three years or four years or whatever, but they’re a dynasty boys.
That is most awesomely bad press script I’ve ever read in my life. You have to read that after every tournament going forward. Every Monday, I need to hear the recap. Well, you guys mentioned it in the chat, but Brooks blew up. I didn’t I didn’t see that.
Oh, yeah. He went absolutely mental.
Nuclear.
Yeah. Yeah.
He was like seven point and he was like seven over something like that. Hit hit a terrible T-shot.
Turned around and smashed a T- marker
just second day.
And then I think after that hole he withdrew. He was like I’m done. Hey, that’s the live way. That’s how we do it at live, you know.
But it’s also the PJ tour way. I don’t I like you can’t like don’t get me wrong the live tour is a joke right now but like they got just as many guys on on the PGA tour doing that [ __ ] Your your favorite your favorite player E Windom he loves doing that [ __ ] Uh
him Rory who did it? Cam Young Cam Young. Yeah. Justin Thomas JT.
Yeah. You got to start start penalizing. There’s no other way around it. Like these fees, they make too much money. These guys make too much money to have money be a a penalty. It’s not actually a penalty if it doesn’t actually hurt.
How are you gonna live golf though?
Yeah, it’s a stroke. Just give them stroke.
Stroke them. Yeah. Stroke penalty tour in a normal tournament in a What are you going to do in live golf? We’re going to dock your team one.
You can do that.
You get points based on how you you get based on how well you score in the rankings. So that’s how that whole team
to my understanding there’s an individual winner and a team winner. So you still could,
you know, take a stroke away or whatever.
Yeah, the stroke still matters for sure.
Ian, you bringing up Windom just did something. I don’t know. I had like a Jimmy Neutron brain blast. Maybe Lyndom is is the smartest guy in the room and he’s making all these theatrics to catch the attention of Liv and he’s about to cash a check from Liv and head over to the next to the other tour and he’s going to be laughing his way to the bank and we’re going to be the slap ticks talking about him. I don’t know. Maybe he’s
I think you’re on to something, Jordan.
I don’t know.
Well, I would actually love nothing more because then that means he’s not in the tour. Kick him off the tour, Doug. There there are some there are some big there are some big rumors going around this whole uh this whole rumor about uh Maroy which it doesn’t sound like it’s a rumor anymore. Maroyy’s moving over to uh back across the pond and where he’s moving the DP World Tour is having having their uh headquarters be right up the right up the street from there. So, in theory, he’ll be right up the road from the DP World Tours headquarters. And there there are rumors that that could mean his his ability to play in tour events, maybe a little bit more strained, aka there could be could be some talks of the live tour. I don’t know. Could be some talks of him getting another divorce. I don’t know. Who knows?
Oh, are we breaking some news here?
Breaking news
potentially. Got I got some sources. I don’t know. We’ll see. We’ll see, man. break divorced again. Okay.
I think the I think the villain arc could could completely hit a climax by him getting a divorce and just going on a complete just raw dog spree. Just going complete Tiger Woods like heyday Tiger Woods going around like
it’s a hot hitting after as much pun as he can potentially handle.
God the worst of you right now. Can you just loop my old boy from last week and anytime he talks just loop me saying oh boy
god. No but seriously like if he’s if he’s moving back over if he’s moving overseas and he’s he’s in talks with the DP world tour which we we know they allow live players to play on. So he still gets to play European tour events. He’s still making official world golf ranking points through through that through those tour events. That means he’s and he’s also he’s in the Masters for Life. He’s he’s in the US Open for Yeah. the US Open, right?
So,
he’s he’s set for a for a long time. If he’s going to do it, now’s the time to do it, right?
Interesting.
When’s the last time like the Liv really made a splash and like poached someone from the PGA that kind of made
It’s got to be Rom. Yeah. Oh, Rom. He took the biggest payday I think out of all of them. Um because yeah he was he wasn’t one in the world but he was top I think he was top three when they poached him. Um and I think they gave
one the Masters.
Yeah 300 mil or something like that. So yeah it’s definitely him.
I mean Ian you you make some solid arguments there of like why? But if I’m going to play devil’s advocate, didn’t Liv come out and say like this next renegotiation of contracts isn’t going to be as much money and you know they kind of have to ring it in a little bit. So, do you think that still leans into Rory would still go?
I think I think he’s as big of a possible draw as the live tour will ever be able to get. I don’t I don’t see Scotty Sheffller ever going over there. I don’t see Morawa going over there. No offense to Morawa, but I don’t think he pulls anywhere near the numbers that u and eyeballs that someone like Roy Moy does. Yeah. I think if they’re going to make a big contract, to your point, I think they are reeling it in because they were handing they were handing out money like [ __ ] hot cakes. Like
I mean, if we had started this podcast a couple years ago, I think one of us could have gotten like a million dollars guaranteed. It’s just like if you can swing a club, like you can come play with us,
right? I’d be an extra. Yeah. Yeah,
to Ian’s point, I think the other caveat to that is that Greg Norman, I think, is no longer officially or if he’s if he is, it’s kind of in a back back office role with Liv. Um, when he was like the CEO, him he and Rory hate each other. It’s well documented. But with him kind of out of the picture, at least in the limelight. He’s not really around anymore. They have a new CEO. I forget his name. That’s something that’s like a hurdle that isn’t really a hurdle anymore to getting him to to join Liv.
I think one of the other things
Jade’s gone next year, too. All right. Go ahead. Go ahead.
One of the things I think we’re forgetting that we haven’t really talked about on this podcast much is, you know, Jay Monahan, Commissioner stepping aside. You know, him and Rory have kind of been handinand, you know, being the spokespeople of PGA versus Liv, you know, with Jay kind of stepping down. Maybe Rory doesn’t feel this sense of loyalty anymore. He’s kind of just saying, “F it.” As we talked about a lot, villain arc, this whole thing, nothing’s holding him back anymore. So yeah, the more we’re kind of talking about it, maybe we’re speaking it to existence. I don’t know. But I think there are a lot of lot of things a lot of things in momentum that Hey, maybe Ian, you’re on to something.
Who knows, man.
Yeah, I think
be crazy.
Yeah, that would be I mean, you just talk about like a full But the uh at the Travelers, I think they had a a meeting players with the new CEO, whatever his name is, Brian Wil. I forget what his name is, but a lot of guys weren’t happy because it was just a lot of the same old information that was relayed to them that this merger that we’ve been talking about for two or three years now is nowhere near closer to being finalized. So, I think that that’s got some guys on the on the PJ tour just being like, what are we doing here? You know, if if this merger is not happening and you know, so again, that’s another thing that could lean some guys to to live get your money while you can type deal. That’s always been the big question mark to me is like all this talk of the merger over this last year’s. I know it’s died down quite a bit, but what would that even look like? Like I I I don’t I don’t see the the the team aspect coming into the tour at all.
And that’s been a big point is that they that’s been like a non-negotiable for Liv is that they want the team aspect and the merger and the PJ tour is like so I think that’s like one of the big stops right there is that like they they can’t compromise on that topic. Yes,
I was I just saw like a an article earlier that someone was saying like, yeah, Patrick Reed won the event, but you know, because they have the shotgun start and he was going to toe with someone else, he was playing on hole like 14 while the other guy that was tied with him or one back was playing on hole like two and they’re like, how like gallerywise even, how do you do that? It just it it doesn’t have the same effect. Like that’s another great point. Yep. Yeah.
It’s just stupid. Liv is just stupid. Well, you know, you have the same you have the same potential issue with with the Sunday finish on the tour, right? Like if one guy finishes it goes super low earlier on in the day, right? And nobody can bring the leaders drop back a couple strokes and never never hit that score, you’re potentially you’re potentially in that same potentially in that same boat. But I will say that for Liv to succeed, they do they absolutely need that team aspect because the way that they are their business plan is focused around those large endorsement deals for the teams themselves, not for the players. So you’re now, you know, Bryson is part of the Crushers, right? It’s not just Bryson. It’s the Crushers. And the Crushers are are making this deal with with whoever the [ __ ] they make a deal with that, you know, because show how much I know about.
It’s the uh like the model.
Yes. Exa Exactly, John. Yeah. That’s the exact They’ve literally come out and said that’s that’s the model that they’re trying to adopt is is that team that team endorsement deal. So, so that it’s never just one player that, you know, somebody gets injured, somebody has an off uh an off round or an off uh tournament, the rest of the team can pick them up and still win and go for that dynasty, which that’s such a [ __ ] stupid phrase to use this early on. But,
man,
teach zero.
I think a backyard baseball dynasty would be more impressive than whatever this dynasty that Liv is talking about. All right. Pablo Sanchez can run three championships up up and down. They’re bringing that to They’re bringing that to the Switch. They’re bringing back our baseball to the Switch.
I know. We need it. It’s the
It’s the announcement we need, not the one we deserve right now. Um and that was Yeah. I mean, the God that that’s such a quote dynasty.
No, I I see it I see it working by having more events similar to the RDER Cup, right? where you where you have you have events every year that you know are are potentially played are potentially played that have that those dynamics of like teams that [ __ ] hate each other. Like that’s what I want to see cuz right now think about on tour who who do who who do you put up against each other that hates each other other than previously seen on Brooks and Bryson, right? Post Brooks and Bryson. When else have we seen something that dramatic against each other? like two guys against Clark.
Who?
Oakmont against Windham Clark. The Oakmont Lockers.
That’s good.
Okay. All right. All right. I I’ll give you that one. Yeah.
Bryce Bryson versus the the rope in the gallery a couple years ago.
Yeah.
Remember that?
Come on, guys. Go. Blames the rope, bro.
What? What’s going on here? Yeah.
Uh no, but I like you just don’t see it. You just you literally don’t see it. I mean, you think Phil Phil and Tiger back in back in the heyday, but I just haven’t seen anything like that as of late. So, you you start building up that drama with with teams against each other that now are going against each other in potentially major major tournaments or major events. That’s what I would that’s what I would look forward to if they were able to come to some sort of merger. TGL is trying to do it right now with uh with the players that they have from the PJ tour, but it’s gonna take so much time to build up that base. I I think it’s gonna take another
three to five years before they start getting any type of drama like that. So, yeah. I don’t know. I don’t know how it comes to that.
Wow. All right. That was a good uh that was a good diet tribe there. All right. Oh, it just went for Brook Brooks breaking a T- marker. All right. That was awesome.
20 minutes out live.
Yeah. Hey, it’s polarizing. Anyway,
more talking points.
I’m not even gonna worry about what Keegan said about JJ Spawn. I don’t think that’s as impactful as
he played he played well again. He played I mean the [ __ ] keeps just playing well.
No, he’s talking about Keegan saying that JJ Spawn’s going to be the heartbeat of the Rup team.
I don’t know what that means. Let’s not
No, but it does. But it’s provocative, but it gets the people going. just ago. It’s a little bit more outlandish than what Jordan just read about the dynasty on live. Honestly, I thought I was going to be the most last we heard, but JJ Spawn being the heartbeat of that team. Find a different word. Find a different word. I don’t know. He’s kind of like the underdog story this year for that team. So, that’s great. So, maybe he will be. If he wins, you can call him whatever you want. But that was that that was that was special in the moment. Yeah. We just need to the the focus needs to be just win, baby. Just straight out of the Oakland Raiders rock lock locker room. Just win, baby. I don’t care who the heartbeat is. I don’t care who the leader is. I don’t care who the captain is. Just win the [ __ ] event. That’s all I care about. And if you want to be special about it, kick Team European’s ass while you’re doing it. Like, don’t make me sweat on the final day like on the singles matches, you know? Just let it be done. Let it be over. Just go out, kick ass, be done, and then you can say someone was the emotional leader after you’ve kicked their ass and you’re popping champagne. All right, there it is. The motivation what he said.
Yeah.
Yep.
Thing we have to talk about. I think it’s a big one. I think it’s it needs to happen. I think everyone in the golf world wants it to happen is this whole talk of the LPGA Tour hater series. Yeah.
To put some kind of amateur golfer against any LPGA star.
I’m all in on that. I would I would that’s actually something that done before.
Yeah. I mean, they’ve got a maybe this is a this is a thing for the LPGA they need to figure out because this will draw them so many eyeballs and maybe it’s an offseason thing. You know, we’re in the fall or the winter. Fly someone now to Arizona, Florida where the weather’s nice and they can play and let’s just let’s get them all chocked up. Let’s video them all. Let’s all roll them out. You know, you make people pay for an app or something. I don’t even care. YouTube get sponsors involved. This is an easy easy money maker. pay pay to fly the the amter out or whoever, put them up in a hotel. I mean, just it’s an easy no-brainer. Got to do it. Well, I I think they do. Yeah. To your point, I think they do it similar to the influencer classic or the celebrity celebrity classic that they just did at at the players this year. Right. Right. before the players, they let they let guys like Trent from Bartow go out there and try to try to play from uh I think they were playing they were playing similar T- boxes as what the what the tour players were and grass was cut the same way that that it was for the rest of the event. Greens were as fast just as fast the rest of the event. Have something like that for [ __ ] I’d love I would have loved to seen a scratch player try to go out there and play that same Aaron Hills course. [ __ ] off. like you’re you could you could [ __ ] right off, sir. You’re you’re getting dusted. Those those LPJ players were just unbelievable. And they still weren’t able to stick the green on most of those bins. So, yeah, good luck.
I think I saw somewhere that someone was like, even if he was a scratch golfer, you put a scratch golfer up against any LPJ tour player and he’ll have like 2% chance of beating them.
Mhm. But the question is is do they make it is it match play and have it over in like 10 or 11 holes or is it like stroke play and just let them sweat every single hole up until the end?
I mean I think I think a scratch I think a scratch player I like those odds though. I like those odds made. You make like one out of 50 one out of 50 times that you play that LPJ tour player, you might eek out a win, right?
But to your point, man, that’s a good question. Match play versus stroke
stroke play because that scratch players Yeah, I I think you’re right. I think there’s there’s going to be they have at least one or two blowup holes, right? That much pressure being a scratch player. I don’t know,
just putting from within five feet, they can be there for forever. Whereas an OP professional OPJ, they’re not going to miss from five feet or, you know, maybe once or twice, but like scratch golfer, they can miss multiple. Like just right there, it’s over. Eric and Ian, what do you what do you think you think the handicap would need to be to have a chance? Plus four. Like a scratch golfer against an LPJ tour player.
Yeah. Would you be like a plus three?
I’d go plus four.
I mean, I think it I think it depends on what TE’s. Are they playing the same TE’s as the ladies? Are they playing further back?
I think they Yeah. Yeah. I mean, that’s that’s true, too.
I mean, I I was going to say higher than what Ian said. I think it’s going to be like it’s might be close to nine strokes for me. No, because because Scotty Scotty plays to a plus like a plus nine plus nine or plus 10 when he’s at his home course.
So you think a scratch would get
against the guys he plays with?
So Scratch would get nine strokes with Yeah. Scratch would get nine with him. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. Potentially even more based on the course slope slope rating, but but yeah, roughly nine roughly nine strokes. And you think about in
That’s the other thing though, right? They’re getting like 30 strokes. But that that that’s the thing though is like a a you could say a scratch golfer at you know a home course that that rating of that course is probably like 70 maybe 69 depending on like just some uni course where and what’s the rating of the the tour courses.
Yeah. Yeah. No, you’re you’re you’re totally right, E, because there’s there are so many different there are so many different course courses that and guys that I’ve played with that are like a five handicap at a place I I played a course out in San Diego, Vista Valley Country Club that had white stakes on both sides of every single hole. So, a five there is going to play a lot better than a five somewhere that you can spray it everywhere off the T- box and there’s no there’s no out of bounds, right? Or there’s no water water hazards next to the greens, right? And they can find it everywhere. So, yeah, it’s a good point. I don’t know. I mean, put put up a a normal everyday scratch golfer or even a single digit handicapper on like a course we play like Todd Hill.
Yeah. Like a scratch golfer munic I think he would struggle to break 80 there.
A scratch on Todd Hill.
Yeah. But like a like a MUN course scratch. Okay. Yeah, I see what you’re saying. Yeah. I mean statistic I gotcha. I got Yeah, because statistically statistically a scratch golfer is going to shoot going to shoot low 70s normally. Like they’re not going to shoot even par on a regular basis from the handicap system, right? Is is your best eight out of the last 20. So those other those other 12 scores are going to be a little bit higher to even it out, but you’re going to have a few in the 60s to keep you keep you in that in that range. Yeah, I’m I’m sticking with my plus four. I think that’s now you’re talking about all right, basically anywhere you go, you can you can you can scrape around. The worst you’re going to do is shoot basically even par. So you’ve got a chance.
Basically, we need to get this going and we need to set this up. Who has an in at the LPGA? figure out how
we will uh we’ll set this up for
John told you how within 30 seconds of us starting this conversation. John had it all. John has it all figured out.
John, you got this covered. Get get it going, man.
Yeah, just if you I just need better internet so I can email people and then we’ll be good.
The only thing that’s holding John back in life is his internet.
Always the internet.
If only he didn’t live in a third world country. Yeah, man.
Hey, you leave this room out of this conversation. Okay. You’re giving hardcore basement vibes right now.
You think I own a basement in this economy, Jordan. I might as well. Yeah, I’m And I’m I’m a member at Augusta National, too. Okay. You know, get real.
Moving on. Let’s uh let’s look at John Deere Classic this week. I think it’s going to be another one of those events. Lots of guys you don’t know, never heard of. I’m looking at the field right now, and the top ranked player in the official World Golf Rankings at number 17 is Ben Griffin. Yeah. He’s hot, man. He’s hot in the streets right now.
So hot right now. He’s 17. I want to see I think he There’s I don’t even think he was inside the top 100 back in January. He’s been on a generational run.
An absolute tear. And I will say this, looking at last year’s results, Ben Griffin did finish T5. Our good FSU friend Luke Clan was an amateur at the time. Finished runner up. Nice.
That’s right.
Yep.
John’s boy Aaron Ry finished top 10.
Did Seth win last year? Thompson.
That’s right. Two years ago. That’s right. Got it.
But the winning score last year
24
28 28 under.
28. Jeez Lee.
I mean
that would take me like a month on Tiger Woods to get to minus 28 and he did four rounds of real golf. It’s bananas.
I’m ready. I’m ready. So ready.
Jason K in the world golf rank. He is number 20
28
eight. Yeah, it’s him. Sanjay M and Ben Griffin are the only in the top 30 on the rankings that are playing this week. Lucas Glover is up there. He’s 46th. He’s the sixth highest in the field. How is he still 46?
He’s he’s just
Kevin Roy is in the field this week.
Bud Collie. Ryan Gerard. Uh, see
your boy Ryan Gerard.
Nick Dunlap. Nick Dunlap.
Dude, this is the week he could get it back here. This is one of those weeks where you could
You know what’s You know what’s crazy? Nick Dunlap is higher in the official World Golf rankings than Jake Knap
and Max. That is weird. Well, yeah, Ricky’s given Jake got some more spots after his finish. I feel like this week he probably gained some.
Yeah, but still Still still not that high. feel like we’re gonna have a tough time with this top 20 bet just because of the same vibes of last week where it’s just going to be a wide open field.
Yeah.
Yeah. But we’re gonna do it. This is it. This is the week playing this week.
This is Zach Johnson’s mate. Like this is his favorite tournament on the planet. He’s won the he’s won the freaking Masters, but this this is this is his tournament. He’s an Iowa boy. This is it.
I was about to say this is hometown turf. Yeah, this is the the fifth major for the Midwest folks. I will say I’m on the uh official website for the for the John Deere. I do appreciate a course that gives each hole a name and the the creativity behind it.
Saw that too.
You got whole 12 is the master stroke. Just
just letting you know that particular reason
you don’t want to take too many strokes on the master stroker, you know.
No, you don’t. You kind of just want to get your three and get out if you know what I mean.
Yeah. They they want you be you got to be careful with your cards on that one. Yeah, very very hope the conditions are good there. You hate to you hate to see sloppy conditions out there.
Yeah, you don’t want it to be too wet or too dry,
man. Any other [Music] We don’t have to limit it to 12.
Yeah, we somehow all have college educations. Somehow Florida State decided to give us degrees.
Hey, we got two you guys in the field this week.
Got Luke and uh John Pac. John Pac.
Nice. Very nice. All right. Who wants to lead us off?
I’m ready to go.
Oh my god. I didn’t even realize that whole 11 is the jump start to hold 12. The master stroke.
Now you tell us. All right. Time out. Go through all
the master stroke. How do you tell the master?
There’s I think I think there’s a story here from one to 18. So let’s real quick. Let’s go through it.
Play it out.
You want me to get them all real fast?
Yes.
Yeah. Oh. Yes. The master stroke says you do. Yeah.
Starting with hole one. Grand detour. Moving on to the Colonel Davenport to the Stonehouse to the Friendship Farm to Lincoln’s Crossing William Butterworth is the six Timber Ridge the seven sanctuary the eight nine is Howitzer Make the Turn to 10 at Core 10. 11 is Jump Start 12 is Master Stroke. 13 is Popping Johnny. 14 is Deer Run. 15 Coal Town Nice Cole Town.
There you go. 16 is mother earth. 17 stadium. And we end at the concistador.
That is a that is a psychedelic trip right there. Who named this?
It’s
We need to find out who named the holes and get them on the pod and just ask them what were you smoking?
I think Can you go through hole 10 through like 14 again? That was like the mini porno right there. Went from like howitzer to
Sure. So you make the turn.
Yep. You make the turn to core 10. 11 is jump start, 12 is master stroke, 13 is pop and Johnny, and then of course 14 is deer run.
Okay, so nine was howitzer. So it’s like nine through 13 are kind of
those are the those are the adult only holes. Don’t bring your kids. Skip go from 8 to 14 unless unless they’re ready for it.
I’m sweating just talking about
Yeah. I mean unless they’re unless they’re too they’re too young for a four-way. So we got to move them on anyway.
All right.
All right. And we’re back.
We’re back. Let’s make some money, boys.
Yeah. Oh, so anyway, where we Oh, um, so we’re doing uh we’re doing Tribe Bet. So,
Mhm.
JT Postman. JT Poston. Pick
I put him twice. Back to the drawing board for me.
Sorry.
No, it’s all right.
He was going to be in there anyway.
Bad sign for you. That That’s who I
You want me to go while you’re while you’re thinking, Jordan? Well, yeah, cuz the app just went down for me.
Sweet. Sweet. Sweet. Sweet. Goddamn. Hard rock.
Hard rock.
All right. I’m loving the visor. Uh, and brought to you by Melvin Golf. Let’s go. Jason Day.
Okay.
All right. Berg mentioned them. I’m willing to be vetoed if all three of you agree.
You You say the name, state your case for like 30 seconds.
I have no case. Shooting from the starting.
Great start, Jordan. Great start. Here we go.
Shooting from the hip. Lucas Glover.
It’s not terrible. Be worse. I
I’m willing to if you want a veto, I’m I’m willing.
Here’s the thing that the fact that you don’t have a reason is actually okay. But if you have a bad reason, aka last week, someone who sat on it for a week and didn’t tell anyone about it.
But how great would that have been if he won that tournament? How great would that have been?
Yeah. I mean, just a complete shot in the dark. But yeah, that would have been that would have been great. And I And you know what, Ian? I would love to have great internet, but we’re not, you know, things just aren’t happening in life. So,
we don’t live in that reality. We don’t live in that reality. That’s true.
Yes. This is a data driven
stupid [ __ ] It’s a data driven pod. And that was bad data. You and your RDER Cup Ricky thing.
Yes. Yes, it was. Jordan, let’s [ __ ] plus 190. Luke Glover. Yeah, plus 190. Not terrible. Like he No,
it’s reasonable. It’s reasonable. Yeah,
he won there. He’s won there before. So, yeah,
I think he has won there before based on my very limited research that I’ve done
based on my super extensive research all of 30 seconds that I didn’t need to make my case for. All right. And
that’s B giving us a weird look. I don’t like it. Why do you have that face?
Patrick Rogers again. Here we go.
No,
I’m thinking Steven Joerger.
Got an outside chance to make the RDER Cup team.
I have two names. One, I’m going on the vibes of Jordan a few weeks ago of you just missed him by one week. So going with that logic, Ricky. So that’s number one.
Or I’m going to wait I’m going to wait for Yeah, I’m going wait for a second option
or Eric Cole because he’s he’s a solid solid player and he’s been playing well the last couple weeks. Well, number one, I can’t find where Ricky is even in the list of uh of odds. So, that’s a bad start.
Ricky’s plus 260 on Hard Rock
for T20.
Let’s Let’s see if this sways. Let’s Let’s Let’s see if this sways it with Ricky in there. We’re at 392 with Ian’s pick because we haven’t gotten his T20 pick, right?
No, I picked Jason Day. Oh, Jason Day. Okay.
Okay. with Eric Cole is 467. So, not a big jump.
So, Ricky’s got the better odds.
Ricky’s got the better.
Better.
We did dog walk Ricky a lot of this podcast, not going to lie. It would seem that the stars should be more in his favor. If you want to get really crazy, I can send a third option out. But this is like shooting for the moon. Good old Mr. 90 himself.
You know, I’m out. I’ve done that. You know,
would be 16,600.
I don’t care. I don’t care.
I don’t think the three of us have vetoed a bet as fast as we have just right there. Maybe we’re wrong, but that was pretty unanimous. That was like a Yeah, that was just a hard no.
Okay, so leave it up to you guys. Eric Cole or Ricky Fowler? I plead the fifth on that.
John John, you seem to know Ricky Fowler better than I do. What? What? Uh,
so I subscribe to the theory and this is you guys who have golf with me recently, you’ve heard me say it. Whatever I say, it’s just it’s the opposite’s going to happen, right? So like, you know, when I’m golfing, you know, g ball never listens to me. I wanted to go in the bunker. I don’t want to go in the bunker, I bunker. So based on that old opposite psychology and what I just mentioned a second ago, because we put a lot of bad vibes out on Ricky, I think it’s Can’t believe I’m saying this, but I think we got to play it because we I think we got to play it just because we we talked him talked him down so much. He can only go up from here.
Give him another shot. Don’t make
it might actually be the first time we’ve gone back toback weeks on picking someone on the tribe.
And that man is Ricky.
And that man is Ricky.
May have I picked Patrick.
Not once if we pick Scotty. Not once. Not once.
Cuz his odds are like you’d win like a cent.
Listen, you want you want to see one go in. That’s it. You know, you want to see, you know what I mean? Like you just
Well, speaking of seeing one go in, I’m kicking off I’m pick I’m kicking off the spirit bets so that none of you [ __ ] can pick him. I’m going Ben Griffin. I’m picking top of the top of the odds leader board.
Risky Ian. That’s right. That’s right.
John, you want to go? Uh Michael Kim, I mentioned him earlier. Uh he’s a good follow on the old Twitter and uh he’s had a good uh good run recently and I think he may have won there a long time ago or had a really good finish. So we’re going to go with him. He’s trying to make it to the the British Open. He’s 55th in the world. He has a good finish this week slashwins. He gets in lot to play for. Love it.
So my guy is someone that I’ve been wanting to pick for a while and he he usually hovers around the top 20. I’ve only won with a Japanese player, so it only makes sense that I stay in that lane. I’m taking Rio Hisatsune. I practiced that name. I practiced that name so much and I still fumbled it.
You did Japan’s the r the land of the rising sun. But to Jordan Cole, it’s the land of the rising bed.
Well done, John.
I’m sorry, Eric. You have to edit so much. I’m not going to edit anything. People need to hear all
if you’ve made it this if you’ve made it this far in this episode.
People need to know
you’re getting the uncut gems version.
Go ahead and scan that QR code that you just saw on
and you’re also a bunch of sicklers. If you’ve made it over an hour into this episode, get a life, but also subscribe. Five stars.
Yeah. Hit like and subscribe. Leave a leave a comment. Wait, we need we need Berg’s uh spear bed here.
Sure do. Just to to make it a little interesting, I’m going to take Mr. 90 himself.
No.
Okay. eventually this teach their own teach their own man. He’s going to he’s going on his own his own journey.
It’s more so I just want it to hit and then just rub it in everyone’s faces next week.
I hope it does. Look, man. I hope it I hope it does.
Listen, we all want to be successful here, okay? Like this is
a gambling
Yes.
This a gambling podcast, man. I hope it does.
One of us wins, we all win. It’s all great, you know, whatever.
Yeah. Have we I guess we can talk about this off off air, but have we constructed the spear that the person’s going to get who ends up winning?
Not yet. Not,
but that’s it’s a great idea. Yeah, that’s that’s on the to-do list because that will go
I think we’re still talking to we’re we’re we’re still talking about to present it at the Ryder Cup what kind of coverage you’re going to give us.
Sure. Good call.
Yeah. I think we need to get in touch with whoever handles Oyola and Renegade and see if we can get a replica of that. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. or even just like a hollowed out one that doesn’t weigh however much it weighs. They never People don’t need to know. It’s going to go right on that wall right there in the middle of my comeback right there.
They only need it like four or five weeks out of the year, you know? It’s true.
It’s better suited in one of our houses. Look, I live close, man. I could drive it up. I’ll drive it up on game days. That’s fine. I’ll I’ll have it in the office. It’ll stay safely sort away in my office on display and then I’ll drive it up for game days. It’ be a good excuse. What are you a four hour drive? Yeah. Yeah, about.
Yeah, like four and a half. But not bad.
It’s been a minute since I’ve been on campus.
Yeah, same here.
I need to I need to get to a game down there. I just need us to be better so it makes it so it makes
Hey, we got we got a quarterback talking that talk. He is.
I don’t mind it. I don’t mind a little confidence.
I mean, he’s just going to be a better quarterback than comp last year.
Well, the bar is very low
games, man.
DJ very low.
Yeah. If he makes the Chargers roster and he ends up being somewhat manageable in the NFL, we won’t talk about that since we’re not football. We’re not gonna talk about that.
We’re not football.
No.
Well, we’re slightly an FSU podcast.
Golf and hockey. My god.
All right, gentlemen.
It’s rock and roll. That’s it.
We got him in.
This is This is the one. This is the one. Come on, Ricky.
We’re running out of running out of tournaments.
Oh, yeah. That’s right. We almost We almost forgot. Let’s look up uh who was our who was our DFL.
A last place guy.
Oh yeah. Pride award. That’s right.
Dead [ __ ] it might have been an amateur.
So let’s be kind.
The pride amateurs don’t count. The pride award goes to
like thinking about it.
Kuck Ashton McCullik was an amateur. Still probably is an amateur.
Know it. Does he have does he have an A around his name?
He does. Okay, moving on. Give me Give me the nine. Michael Thor Bjorn. Wasn’t he on the Ryder Cup team?
Who are you? Where are you seeing that? I don’t see this at all.
If you chat GBT this again,
Michael Thorson was about to win at some point. Ian, he did not come.
It was Ashton McCullik. He’s an amateur. He finished eight over.
Who is the non- amateur?
I’m screw.
Evan Brown.
And this might be the lowest finish any former pick on this pod has finished, but Keith Mitchell finished almost DFL.
Yikes. It hurts better.
There we go. Yeah, Evan Brown plus six. So, shout out to you, Evan Brown. You’re a pro golfer.
Shout out to you, Mr. Brown.
Thank you for making it. Thank you for showing up. Until next time.
Good episode, boys. Good stuff. Yeah.
West Open.
Scottish Open is next week.
Scottish Open. We’re two weeks out from the Open.
Oh, boy.
Scotty’s Scotty should be in the Scottish Open, right? That’s where he’s getting his practice rounds in.
Yeah, a lot of guys are are in that one. Yeah, it’s good field. We’ll get to Scotty next week. Fair enough. First offens
