Which golf ball should you be using? It’s a question that not many of us know the answer to. So, today we set out to find which one is going to work best for you.
We’ve got 18 balls here. Le
18 dozen.
And we’re going to be going through putter, wedge, seven iron into driver, giving you all the numbers, and this is how we’re going to do it.
Okay. So, actually testing the golf balls. It’s not an easy thing to do. We started off on the putting green. We did
and then worked our way up the bag. So, why is it important to start with a putter? With a golf ball,
you’ve got to get the ball that feels right for you. Also, acoustically as well, I think if you find something which you get good feedback off of that feels and rolls quite nicely off the putter,
that is massively important even just to start on the putting green.
You’re right. That is very important because if you don’t like the way a ball looks and feels, it’s never going to be good for you on the green.
No, it’s not. So, in the budget category, which we’re looking sort of under £35 a dozen, you’ve gone looks and feel top of the range Wilson Duo Soft. Now, this is interesting because there’s alignment systems going on here, and it’s quite a soft golf ball as well.
Yeah, world’s softest golf ball. But surprisingly, it has a really nice acoustic to it. Yes, it does come off the putter, but it has a bit of feedback off it as well, which I actually really liked. I could tell if I’d hit one maybe a little bit too strong, a little bit too short, if I’d hit it off the toe, if I hit it off the heel. Not only that, it obviously has that 360 alignment around it as well, which was really nice, which makes it easier to line up your putts.
Yeah, you’re holding a lot of putts with that. It was good. It was It was nice. That’s why I like that one.
Then the premium. So, this is money no object. Best golf balls that you can get each brand. Money’s no object.
You’ve gone with that. A brand I think I’m aware of. Titus Prov1. What did you like about these ones? I mean, tightless just know what they’re doing when it comes to a golf ball. It It’s consistent. It’s got that kind of medium kind of feel to it. It comes off soft. The feedback’s great, but the consistency as well. Um, it’s just class. If it’s a golf ball I was to kind of drop and and hit on the on the putting green like straight away, I just gravitate towards that cuz I just like the sound and the feel of it straight away. It’s just great. And it looks great, too.
Excellent. Once we got to grips with the 18th green at Murray Hall saw, which had some pretty big slopes in it. You were you the greens are unbelievable.
Yeah, we went to hit some wedge shots with the GC quad, we got some spin numbers.
Yes, the GC quad. Fantastic bit of kit that. So, with the GC quad, obviously it’s got four cameras, two cameras picking up the club data and two cameras picking up the ball data as well. So, ideal for testing golf balls. So, on a day like today with wedges, it’s all about trying to find the perfect balance of spin for your game. one that came out on top. Now, this is interesting. It was the Vice Tour for the budget golf balls. So, this was one that was spinning really consistent for you around 6,900 RPM. What did you like about that?
It felt really good. The one thing I noticed when you clipped it, you could hear it just kind of like revving through the air, and I was like, “Oh, you know, some of some of the golf balls, obviously with them being distance balls, they don’t necessarily spin that much when it comes with wedges,
but this was different. this kind of came off and it really did have some great spin off it. It surprised me a lot and fair play to to Vice really impressive on on the spin numbers.
Premium golf balls, you’re expecting a lot of spin here and we did get that really high spin numbers overall. We saw quite a difference between budget and premium balls. This is probably the biggest factor where we could see that. We’ll see the numbers at the end. Coming out on top here, spinning around 7,500 RPM. It was the tightest prov once again.
What a surprise. Now, interesting looking at the wedge spin numbers here, they’re almost identical through the shots that you hit. Really impressive. But yeah, no, again, going from that consistency standpoint, even from the putter when you’re hitting it, like even I I maybe caught one or two off the heel or off the toe, but the spin numbers didn’t really differ too much
for me. Yeah, it was just very consistent and just really easy to basically trust as well, which is a big part of that when it comes to those 60 yard shots as well. Yeah, you’ll see in the the numbers that you’ll see later, a lot of wedge spin. Some of them you might have got a bit more spin than the Prov1, but that the consistency is just hard to see.
Yeah, the consistency standpoint just really did out outshine.
Then we went up to the seven iron, went from mid iron, and here we were looking at peak height and descent angle. It’s important because it’s going to hold greens when you’re hitting into greens. You don’t want to be sailing through the back of
100%. No, like when it comes to peak height and descent angles, it doesn’t really matter how high or or low it is, but if it’s coming down at the right angle, especially around the between 45 and 50, I mean, that’s what the best players in the world are obviously, you know, producing, you know, you’re in the right ballpark when you’re looking at those numbers. So, for me, I’m trying to find something which falls into that because obviously I’m a I’m a high speed player. But if I can find a golf ball that doesn’t spin too much and and stay in the air for too long,
then I know I’ve got something that’s going to come down with a lot of spin.
Well, one that we found very well in the budget category here was the tightest true feel. Now, very impressive. I was very surprised by this.
Very consistent numbers here. Peak height was ranging around 120. Descent angle average 48. And I think all the shots you hit were really in that region. Very, very good stuff here. Yeah, again, tightless consistency. You just saw that ball nice and high. Didn’t really kind of float or anything like that, but it surprised me with the spin numbers as well. And it obviously was coming down. You had a great descent angle as well. So, you’re going to be able to really attack flags and get a nice bit of height and just drop them in there, too.
Now, in the premium category, we had a lot of contenders here. Callaway Chrome Tour is a very close second. Yes,
performed well. The tailor made5X was up there. But once again,
the Pro V1, you can’t argue with the numbers on this, can you?
No, you can’t. Again, the consistency in it was incredibly impressive. I think, like you said, there’s, you know, Callaway, Shrixen, all your usual suspects and top brands. They’re so close together. Like, we are spl we are literally splitting hairs when we come to it. But the one which came out on top just purely down in consistency was Titus Pro V1. I think the the descent angles were 49 about 49 if I’m correct.
Y
and then obviously peak height is going to be around that 120 125 mark.
Exactly.
Yeah. Exactly. So that’s that’s what I’m looking for in a golf ball. And again the prov definitely delivered on that front.
Mhm. So then we moved on to the driver now. Probably your favorite club in the bag. I think that would be fair to say. My favorite to watch you hit.
Yeah. Quite successful with the driver this year. Yeah, excellent. Start with the budget balls. Look, we don’t need to tell anyone how important it is that a ball goes far. That’s the whole aim of the game of the tea.
One that’s been kind of knocking on the door. We’ve not mentioned it yet. It’s the Kirkland. Now, this was going an absolute mile.
It was fast.
Very fast. And consistently a long way, averaging around mid 330s. Very impressed with this.
Yeah, I think for a budget ball, Kirkland is just It is hard to beat, isn’t it? Like let’s be honest, a three three-piece golf ball that is, you know, it was fast, long, great spin, and just very very consistent off off the tea as well. You know, we’ve actually tested that ball like already this year. But yeah, absolutely loved it and would recommend it if you’re definitely on a on a budget for sure. Yeah, look, it was carried a long way, but there’s some others really close and ball speed seed country mile was impressive in this car.
Great name for a you’d want that one to go far. Country mile tightless True Field did well. this 199 ball speed. It was close. Vice Tour did very well at 199 ball speed as well. Wilson Geo Soft 199.
There’s a lot of balls really performing well in this category, which is good to see.
It was It is splitting hairs though when you’re coming coming to it because obviously there’s so many different balls that that spin slightly differently, maybe a little bit higher in in flight as well. But when it comes down to like that that carry distance, that’s that’s where where it matters most.
Exactly. And one that did particularly well in this category in the premium ball. It’s not the Titus Prov1 this time. Ball speed winner with the driver. It was the Wilson. Now you really liked this ball. We took it out. The putting green. You said you love the way it looked. It’s performed very solidly through the bag, but you did have some really long shots with this. What did you like about the Wilson staff?
Consistency in ball speed was was noticeable. Very high. 206 very fast, but very consistent in flight as well. more of that kind of mid-flight which I kind of like off the tea. It only picked the Prov1 by one mile an hour and let’s be honest again it’s so close with some of these brands but at the end of the day it does come down to you know preference and and personal preference in that as well and every golfer is different and everyone wants to find something slightly different as well but
it wasn’t the longest was it? No. Well, I was going to say the Callaway Chrome to incredibly long off the tea here, averaging in the mid 360s, which is incredible. Like your ball speed was similar, but something about this ball just made it carry so far. Yeah, it it had a really nice kind of like high launch kind of low spin characteristic to it. Wasn’t the firmst in feels, but it did travel. And like you said, it wasn’t quite as fast as your Wilson staff, but the flight through the air, it really did just want to go and it just felt like it stayed in the air for for a long time. It was very, very impressive. Okay, so a lot of numbers to get through there. Again, you can look through them, pause the video, you’ll see all the numbers on screen. Your favorite budget ball from today, James, is
the Kirkland Signature.
Well, there we go. Talk us through. Why do you like that?
It’s just bloody good for the price. I think you you can’t argue with that. Obviously, downside, make sure you find a mate that’s got a Costco card or if you have a Costco card, then go get yourself a lot of those balls because they are great. And I think if you are on a budget, then they’re going to do you very, very well. I think the feel consistency kind of factor the spin really surprised me with the wedges but not only that just off the tea the kind of descent angles as well
your kind of peak heights it all just made like a really good all round complete budget ball and I really really enjoyed it
our winner the premium ball
I mean it comes as no surprise as the titless one
the consistency from green to tea is just absolutely phenomenal I think the One thing I really liked was the spin consistency, especially with the wedges and the irons, and then off the tea, it’s just so stable. Yeah, absolutely fantastic. Absolutely loved it. Just very consistent, and consistency is key, and the Prov1 has all that and a lot more. So, on that note, if you’ve enjoyed the video, remember to give us a like, give us a sub, and I guess we’ll we’ll see you next time.
See you next time.
