PGA Tour star Jordan Spieth suggested that TPC Deere Run is one of the easier golf courses last year, but he won’t be in action at the John Deere Classic to back up his claims.

The John Deere Classic will forever be special to Spieth, as it was the site of his first win on the PGA Tour, before successes at the Masters and the U.S. Open followed. Though he didn’t win the event last year, Spieth claimed it was one of the easier courses, carding 15-under par and finishing tied-26th.

Spieth won’t be in action at the John Deere Classic this year, and he hasn’t played since suffering an injury and withdrawing from the Travelers Championship last month. Spieth is expected to return for The Open Championship, but is currently waiting for his wife to give birth.

After withdrawing from the Travelers Championship, the PGA Tour star confirmed his absence from the John Deere Classic. Spieth has also opted out of the Genesis Scottish Open but will be in action at the year’s final major.

“It’s disappointing,” Spieth said recently. “We’re having a baby here in a couple of weeks, so I’ll have some time off now, obviously, to get healthy, but hopefully, after a few days, I’ll go through the right process to just get right back to where I was.”

It’s a setback for Spieth, who won’t have the chance to build momentum heading into the major competition. Judging by his comments last year, the John Deere Classic would have been a great chance to gain confidence.

After Friday’s second round last year, where Spieth shot a 67, he boldly admitted that the course was easy. “It’s one of the probably bottom-half easier golf courses,” Spieth said.

“It’s a great golf course. When it’s soft it’s one of the easiest ones we play. Yeah, I can make a move, but everyone is going to make a move.

“So I will try and beat the field average by four or five shots, but that is going to take shooting 8- or 9-under.

“So it’s not like it’s a walk in the park. You still have to hit nice shots.”

However, Spieth admitted that the course had some negative aspects, as sometimes good shots weren’t rewarded. The former World No. 1 also conceded that golf can sometimes be unpredictable, meaning it’s not specific to TPC Deere Run.

“It’s a great golf course,” Spieth added. “The only downfall sometimes here is sometimes you hit some nice shots that just – someone can hit from a harder position and is end up being in a better spot. That’s golf. That kind of happens everywhere.”

Once he returns, Spieth will be looking to win the Open Championship, a major he previously triumphed at in 2017. The competition was held at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England, but it will take place at the Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland this year.
