WASHINGTON, D.C. – Vanessa Trump is shedding light on the inspiration behind the name of her daughter, Kai, the eldest granddaughter of President Donald Trump.
Vanessa Trump, who shares five children with her ex-husband, Donald Trump Jr., recently explained that her daughter’s name honors her late grandfather, Danish jazz musician Kai Ewans.
“My grandfather’s name was Kai, and I always loved the name. I was very close to him—he was like a father to me.” Vanessa Trump said. “Kai means ocean, and that’s one of my favorite places to go—the ocean.”
Kai Trump, born in 2007, has followed in the footsteps of her mother’s boyfriend, Tiger Woods, by developing a passion for golf. She played competitively for The Benjamin School in Florida and has committed to join the University of Miami women’s golf program as part of the class of 2026.

Woods and Trump discussed the name in a recent video shared on social media, where they described the importance of keeping family traditions alive.
The couple confirmed their relationship earlier this year after months of speculation. In March, Woods posted a photo on Instagram with Trump and their children, calling her “my best friend” and asking for privacy as they move forward together.
Woods shares two children with his ex-wife, Elin Nordegren, while Trump has five children from her previous marriage. The blended family has been spotted attending school activities and golf tournaments.
Both Woods and Trump have kept details of their relationship largely private but have shared occasional glimpses on social media, including family outings and milestone celebrations.
