Is This The Best Value Golf Course In New Zealand? | Waipu Golf Course, Northland, NZ

Good morning everybody. Isaac here. We’re here at Wipu Golf Club on a beautiful morning. This has to be the best value for money golf club in all of New Zealand. Breathtaking views, stunning greens, nice fairways. The course plays pure. It’s difficult and it’s going to be a lot of fun. First hole here, it’s a pretty straight away par four. Easier hole to start the day. Pretty straight. Just goes up and over. Rise. Can’t see the green. Goal here is just to hit one up the left side with a little fade back into the fairway. Give myself a short little wedge shot into the green. Yeah, let’s get to it. It’ll be fun. [Music] It’s kind of a hole where right is a lot better than left. So, it faded. That’s the goal. Definitely the right miss out here. It opens up the green. Uh was not a good strike. I almost missed the club face, but that’s all right. Got 139 m to the pin. It’s on a front and you’d ideally want to be short cuz putting down hill is quite quick. So, I’m going to go 9 iron and I think if it lands short, there’s a little skirt. So, it should bounce up onto the green anyway. So, the plan is 9 ir just a full committed 9 iron straight at the pin. I mean, I think that’s perfect. Executed pretty well. I got a big bounce and I think it landed short. So hopefully it’s by the pin or pretty close. I think it did land short. Just got a really big bounce off that fringe short and boosted all the way back up here. But it’s a green and rig. So happy with that big part. Breaking left to right most way. Then just back to the left at the end. Oh. Oh, I thought I made that. Just playing it just outside uh left edge. Should break a little right. Bang. I hit that pretty hard, but it’s in the hole. So, good four to start with. Second hole here is one of the most scorable holes on the course. It’s a shortish dog leg right par five. Uh you can choose how much you want to cut off the corner, but there is lost ball material on the right if you cut it too much. Uh my goal here is just to play one straight at the bunkers down the fairway, hit a little fade off them and put myself in goodstead to hit the green for two. But yeah, one shot at a time. Lock in. Oh, so nice. It’s straight in the bunker. Oh, no. Hopefully, it’s just short of the bunker. It’s quite far to the bunker. It’s like 270 or something from these TE’s. Yep. Awkward lot awkward standing, but that’s fine. I’ll be able to hit it on the green from there. Back in the fairway. 153 m to the pin. I’m going to go eight irons. Playing a little bit downhill. And again, I think it’ll kick on if I’m short. So, just rather do that. Um, don’t want to miss left. So, just going to aim middle of the green. If I draw, it should be at the pin and if not, just below the hole for a nice putt for birdie hopefully. Oh, don’t know what’s happened there, but not shifting my weight. It’s all good. Not our finest work there, but we got incredibly lucky. Just rolled up nicely. You can see the do line here. So, we got to look for birdie. It’s going to be real quick out the just down the fringe. And then once we get it on, it’s going to be lightning little right to left. Oh, yeah. It’s all good. We did the right thing with the weight. Like, as you can see, it just I hardly hit it. Just didn’t get it high and I felt that rough. Bit of a tester for par again. Little pull. Dang, that’s a really bad bogey, but keep the head in the game. Get one back on the next few holes. It’s all good. Big par four here. This is the one with the new green, which I’m really excited to see when we get up there. It used to be pretty much unplayable in high winds and when the green’s quick cuz it was on such a slope. We’re actually the first people today playing it. They’ve just opened it back up, so should be fun. Dog leg, right? Just heard a cut up the middle. Yeah, this about as good a driver as I can hit on this hole. Fairway found. We’re actually just off the fairway, but we’ve got 139 in. Uh, but it’s uphill, so we’re going to go eight iron. Hit one nice and tight up there. Looks like the pins on the front. So, should be some room to land behind it if we go a little long. Keep turning it over. Not great. I need to figure that out. But it’s all good. We’ll have a shot up there. Get up and down for par. Not actually too bad. Uh over here on the left with that pin. I’m going to favor left side. It looks going to break to the right. Just land it up on top and let it trickle. Right. be good. Oh yeah, happy with that chip. Let’s make that for par. Such a cool green. I love what they’ve done changing it. I put slipes in different tiers. You got so many different P positions. It’s such a big green now. It’s awesome. Oh, okay. That was good. This is one of the harder holes on the course. So, really happy with that path. Um, didn’t psych myself out like last hole after I hit that terrible eight iron thinny. Um, yeah, now is an important time to hit a good iron shot cuz the next hole was tough, but absolutely beautiful. One of the coolest, but also one of the hardest parries in New Zealand. It’s over 200 m to the middle of the green. 206 m to the middle. Nice smooth four iron. We’re short. Should be a getable up and down. But yeah, par is always a great score on this hole. Sweet. Landed on the green, which is roll stop there. Wow. Okay, we’re on the left back back leftand corner of the green. Landed on the front middle. Kind of rolled to the left with the draw, but hey, hitting this green is always a good day. But tricky two putt coming up. Oh, really good putt there. Yeah, when it’s off the black te’s, it’s a hard hole. So stoked. Stoked with that one. Let’s get that other shot back. Hole five here is a dry ball. It’s 275 m to the pin. You can go really far left today, especially with the pin on the right. So, I’m going to hit driver, and if if I fade it enough, it’ll be on on the green. Uh or just short of the green. Oh, faded a bit too much. Might be trouble there. That was not a very committed swing. It’s all good. We’ll find it. We got kind of lucky there. Uh it’s a bad lie, but they’ve cut this all back out. I remember this all used to be real thick uh bushy stuff like that. Got our ball. Yeah, I think it probably should just be an iron off the tea. So, I’m short of this stuff and then just a wedge in. Anyway, goal here, lob wedge. Just go left of the pin. Try to keep it below the hole. Just get on anything on the green I’ll be happy with. Two putt. So, Oh, that came out really clean. I actually got such good contact on it. I just hit it way too hard. Oh, wow. Oh, it’s going to be hard up and down, but it’s all good. Lesson learned off the tea, eh? One bounce on the fringe and then on the green is the goal. Pretty much straight at it. Go in. Oh no, I hit my shot. This came out hot. We can make these. Oh, smoked it past wow. Okay, good bogey save. Uh, that’s all right. We’ll learn from our mistake on that hole. Four iron wedge next time. Hey, Isaac. Another one of those drivable par fours, but this one I don’t really like too much cuz if you fade it too much, there’s water all on the right. So, we’re going to hit four iron. Get two good shots here on the green. I mean, it’s going to work. Almost missed the club face. I don’t know. I feel like I’m getting stuck, so it’s not good. But it’s in the fairway. First fairway hit I think today. 115 m in. Going to go gap wedge. A full one. Just a little ride of the pin. Should be good. I mean, it went a little right, but not that far, right? It’s all good. Should think it’s on the front edge. Line’s good. Could have given it a bit of pace up that hill, but visualize it going in. Set. Wow. Actually, really quick. I I didn’t even think when I hit it it was going to be that far past. All right, we need to dial in these distances. I’m hitting everything long. Stay up. Did not hit it. Ah, it’s a three part. What am I doing? It’s all good. Relatable content happens. Hole seven, par three, 150 m. Straight at it. 7 iron. Little bit uphill. Yeah, I’m trying to hit hold offs, but I’m not hitting the shot. Just hitting everything left when I take like a good strike. Like divots’s good and everything. It’s just something my grip just feels funny with the club. I just feel like I got no control of where the face is. Left side of the green. It’s all right. Just got to land it just on the green and let the green take it downhill to the right. We’re aiming almost up at that other pre-cut hole where we kind of want line we want to land it on. [Music] Yeah, pretty good touch. Got real good contact on it. It’s all right. We’ll make that part. Take our time. Make it. Okay. Another slider putt. Couple holes out. Like a foot out. Oh, what? I really thought that was going to break more. Oh, wow. Another bogey. I want a bogey train. Par five next though, so Oh, let’s get one back. Not my best golf today, but good to get it out this week. Course is beautiful. Stoked to be playing big par five here up the hill. Chance to get one back though. Uh you got OB left. It’s open right. So just hit one up the middle. Little fade. If we end up right, it’s good anyway. We hit one straighter. It’ll be sweet. Ah, stay down the middle. Stay up. All right, it’s in the fairway. Low cut. It’s good shot here in the fairway. Uh, I kind of been pulling my irons left. So, I’m going to hit my fade uh with my 3-wood and um just hit one up the fairway, get close to the green. I just want a little pit shot on. Give myself the best chance of birdie. Not a good shot. I’m struggling today. Such a perfect day for golf, too. Grateful to be here, obviously, but sucks when you’re not playing your best. I can just see the top of the pin from here. I’m going to go n ir straight at it. I had a fade. Not sure how it got here. Must have bounced off this hill here. Tricky little lie, but we’re pin high. We got a chance to get up and down. So, let’s make it happen. Eh, that was a lot better. Let’s tap it in. All right, good save there. onto the last hole of the front nine. Hey, ninth hole. We’re battling here, but let’s just finish on a positive this front nine. Yeah, just kind of go straight over the corner here. Fade one into the fairway at one on the green. I didn’t hit it good. Hope it’s all right. 119 in. We’re going to go pitching wedge. Got to get it up there or else we’ll roll off the false front. I blocked that. Yeah, my aim wasn’t that bad. Oh, that is in a tricky spot. That was a massive block. Uh, just got to get this chip up there. So, break right to left. Did not really release much. I spun it. All good. Scratch golf back n question mark. 10th hole. We can good drive. You can get down there pretty close to the green. Some people hit it on. My goal is just to get past that first bunker. Just fade it off the left. Bunkers off the green. Oh my sky ball.

No way. They end up down by those behudawas somewhere down there. He’ll be findable. Not how I wanted to hit my first drive, but we got to go straight at the pin. Just left of it. There a little bit of mud on the ball from it. Just bounced out of it plug mark. Go left of it. Try to get it on the green. That just flew out right. No, it’s way right. It’s going to be a tricky up and down. Hey, not a great lie and it’s incredibly difficult shot. Be really good if I got this up and down. I had to land up on the right and let it kick left and got my spot. Just trust it. Honestly, pretty good. Landed a little bit long of where I was trying to hit it, but it’s safe. Yeah, if I leave it short, it just rolls back down off the green. Two-part bogey or one putt par. Got to be on for pace here cuz long is off the green. Stay up. Good effort. Oh, tap in for bogey. Bit of a shame cuz this is like one of my favorite holes in New Zealand. So cool. Drivable par four with the most amazing view. Hard hole here. Just got to aim at the tree with a fade. It’s long long par 4 over 400 m. Yeah, it’s a little bit better that one just left of the tree. Hopefully got a lie. Hit a decent drive there. Still got 165 m to the pin. It’s just past these trees here. Going to hit little draw with my sixiron. Oh, I hit it so good, but it’s so far right. I think it’s in play, though. But it was a nice strike. Well, we had the right club, so that’s positive. Um, tricky lie. Just got to land one in the fringe and let it trickle down to the pin. Should break a little left once it gets on the green. Go in. Please go in. Oh, that was my best shot of the day. Woo! Bogey train is over. Two par fives. Let’s see if we can get a couple shots back. 12th hole here. Par five dog leg right up the hill. Yeah, we’ve got all the room to the left. So, we’re going to aim at those left booted cars every round. I pull it left of it. Doesn’t matter if I fade it be in the fairway. So that’s the game plan. Well, there’s the fade we’ve been wanting all day. We got up on the top bit, which is good. It’s a good drive. We got about 250 to the middle of the green, so can’t get there with threewood uphill. So, we’re just going to have five iron layup and try to give ourselves like a 100 meter shot in. Uh, just going to go straight up at those toy toys on the hill. A little right of those. Yeah, should be up in the flat part on the fairway. About 110 m. It was 106 to the pin, but it’s probably playing 110 uphill. Slight into Was going to hit a soft pitching wedge, but I like a hard gap wedge. And if it flies a little long, could be good. So, it’s all good. Just want to hit a full shot here. Let’s throw it at the pin. Looked like it landed deep into the green and came back down. We’ll have a look, but it’s a good strike on that gap wedge. Ball stayed where it landed. Got a long putt down the hill, right to left, then left to right. So, we’re going to play it pretty straight again. Just got to get my pace right. Yeah, pro. Good pace. I just started it a little too far right. It’s okay. Should be an easy path. Well, there’s two pars in a row. We’ll take it. Onto the next. Got 140 m here. Absolutely beautiful path three. Super tough when the wind’s whipping. You just whatever you do, you don’t want to miss left. Pretty much green. You got to hit rig. I’m going to hit eight iron today. Take short out of play. Just try to hit something on the green. Be good. Oh, that was a nice smooth eight. A good shot. I feel like that’s a pretty good spot to could maybe chip in or get up and down from there. Little chip in if I’ve ever seen one straight up the hill. Oh, it bounced left on me, but that was a good chip. Easy par. Beautiful. Up and on to the next hole. Let’s go. Big par five down the hill. Uh, this one’s definitely very getable, especially cuz it normally plays downwind. Had a good driver. I can definitely get there. So, goal here, hit one up the left. Little fade in the middle. Get myself a look to get on the green for 2. That was one of the best tries I’ve hit in a while. Should should definitely be able to go the green and two from there. 210 m to the pin. Just bounced out of the fairway here, but threewood’s too much. I’m going to hit four iron and it’s a little bit down breeze downhill. So, we might be able to get it there. Yeah, it’s middle of the green. It’s the goal. Oh, I lasered it straight at the pin. Oh, I think it just landed just in that front bunker. It was a good shot, though. Ah, all good. We came up short. Um, but that’s all good. We’re in a really good spot. Want to leave this chip below the hole. Land it once in the fringe. Bounce on. Um, leave myself an uphill part or just hold it. That would be nice. Ah, didn’t land it in the fringe. I hit it nice. I just hit it bit hard, but we still got a P for birdie. break. Oh, I had a really good roll. I thought it’s okay. Knock it in. Ah, frustrating. Let that one. That was good hole, but it’s all right. Still par. One of the more difficult holes. Usually plays into a pretty strong wind. Just a little wind today. Dog leg right up the hill. Par four. Got to hit a good drive. Just going to hit up those pretty much at the clubhouse with a fade is the goal. Kind of at that sand trap with a fade. Let’s come out. Let’s hit another good swing. I think that’s good. Was nice shot shape. Should be fine. Hopefully in the fairway or just right rough. Solid drive there. Happy with that. Found the fairway finally. 155 m, but it’s playing uphill and into wind. So, probably like 165. Going to go six iron. Let’s get it up on the green. Good committed swing here. Oh, snap hook into the bunker. Or didn’t go in the bunker, left of it. But yikes. We have gotten extremely lucky. May look like I placed the ball here, but somehow stopped here nicely between these beautiful bunkers, all three of them. Uh, good look here to get up and down actually. So, let’s make the most of it. Good break. Go. Ah, not bad. It was a good line. Just didn’t quite hit it hard enough, but up. Let’s make it. Oh, I did not hit it. I don’t know why cuz I hit so many long on the I really don’t like that. Okay. Dang it. It’s another bogey. Beautiful par four. Just going to have to fade off that left bunker. or a big draw. I think that’s fine though. Yeah, it’s fine. It’s just going to be a blind second shot. A smooth one straight over this hump in front of me or the right edge of it. Could be good, could be bad. Don’t know. We’ll see. Little tester for P. Good P. Take that for being a blind second shot. Two to go. 155 m. Going to go full seven iron into a slight breeze. Everything kind of feeds to the left if I land it just right of the pin. So, let’s try to get something close. Eh. Oh, did not strike it good either. Stay out of it. It’s fine, but it is not a good strike. We’re lucky to get over the water. um opportunity here to play a fun shot into the bank behind the pin and let it come back down towards the hole. So, I’m going to try to Oh, no. Just didn’t hit it hard enough. Come back down. I mean, that’s pretty good. Pretty well done. Another bogey. All good. Smile through the pain. No. Such a sick hole, though. I love this green and this hole. It’s cool as all 18th hole. Uh little dog leg left. Well, it’s kind of T points you right, but goes up the left towards the clubhouse. It’s real sick green. Cool hole. Cool finishing hole. Quite difficult. Um sort of drive little fade off these left behudawas. Snap hook again. Get left more. It worked out. All right. All right. Try had a plus five iron on the green to finish with. Eh, just going straight over these bud cars. Oh, it’s the best shot of the day. Well, at least we finish on a good shot. That’ll keep me coming back. It’s an aggressive swing. So, I think it’s on the green, which is crazy. In the air, the shot, but just came long here. Pitch just past the pin. Rolled up here. It’s going to be a slick put. Just don’t want to go long. So, more caution on the short side. Yeah, it’s good part from out of the fringe. So, there’s a part to finish with, I think. The greens, fairways, and tee boxes were all in great condition, and the hospitality was amazing as usual. My game wasn’t quite dialled, but when you’re out on a course like this — you’ve already won the day.
