The easiest, strongest yet the most relaxed way to grip the disc is to use the meaty part of the thumb to squeeze the disc. That way you don’t have to tense the fingers and the wrist, but you can stay more relaxed and focus on the arm swinging effortlessly, not the disc slipping out too early.

if you grip with the pinch grip which means that is basically only used from the tip of the thumb very hard for you to curl the arm in I mean it’s possible but for me and many other people I know it’s quite hard to curl the arm to the deep pocket which makes you sling out the disc and I’ve seen a lot of students do this they keep the wrist open at all times basically that’s a recipe for late release and a lot of shoulder pain so rather than than pinching like this try to get the meaty part on the plat this makes you a lot more relaxed on the arm and it doesn’t really even matter if you power grip three finger grip or if it’s a mod fan or if you use all four fingers if you get the thumb on the plate you get a lot more power and on top of that the wrist curls in a lot more smoothly you grip from the outside a little bit more meat on the plate and then you sling up

  1. Oh man, I'm feeling as excited to try this as I was after trying the back loaded grip to get the nose down (which really worked for me). Definitely going to try this! This seems very natural!

  2. I have been playing for 4 years. I have heard similar advice to this but I never quite got it. This is the first time I have truely understood what those people were trying to say. Great way of explaining this.

  3. For power and control I still find the thumb is in a better spot closer to the rim for me a bit. I guess thumb position is about individual feel? I also can't do a strong power grip. I get more distance from focusing on the pinch point mainly. I most be doing something wrong. Haha 😂

  4. Wanted to come back and comment on this after I had an awesome throw session, incorporating this tip late into the session.

I've always been able to curl my wrist quite comfortably. I use a three finger power grip (back loaded). But adding the thumb/meaty part of the hand deep into the flight plate feels weird at first, but I found it much easier to get into a deep pocket and have the disc rip off my hand!

It felt more like the disc rolling off my three fingers and created massive spin!

Finished my session with a 149m backhand with a Big Z nuke which is my longest throw to date.

Had a number of throws between the 120 and 149m mark which is great and look forward to getting more distance with this technique amongst others!

    Thanks again mate!

  5. Man, that “this is a recipe for a late release” hit me like a missile. That’s exactly the issue I’ve run into!

  6. I recently came up with this technique on my own. That I spin the disc much better with this grip. However, I just finished watching Ricky's practice round in WACO and he holds the discs with an incredible pinch. But I'm not Ricky..

  7. I am more of a pinch gripper, I'm not super good MA4 but I've been playing a long time just for fun, I watched this and was ok what's this butthole on about, if I try this its such a huge change it's going to ruin my timing. So I went out to the course the other day and was like OK lets try this a bit. Holy crap. My release was so much more consistent, thanks man!

  8. Been in the game for 20 years. Old habbits die hard. My pinchy 2 finger still my main, use hyzer angles to midigate "grip lock." Something to be noted. When i go to a modified fan thumb pad grip. I notice the discs have more "torque tolerance" and hyzer flip is harder to achieve. It's more of an "Isaac" throw where i need to put the disc on the intended angle. Both are super useful, but it takes time. Have fun and dont take tournament rounds too seriously if you're out there for enjoyment and not paying bills with it.

  9. There's a scientific study that determined the most distance was achieved from the thumb being closer to the rim (not right on the rim, but I just a touch from the edge)

  10. Can you tell me what to expect from changing from a modified fangrip to a powergrip? tried it a few times and had quite a lot of griplocks, but if i hit the release clean, i need less power for the same distance. Does the powergrip change where i have to aim?
    thx for answering 🙏
